Pets and minions are pretty much strict to Cartel Market items that you can redeem on your characters.
You can get them via Cartel Market purchase or from Player Market directly.
While you can have pets follow you around, it really isn't advisable... for one, they are pretty much a waste of money due to having zero use outside of just "being visible".
But more importantly, a number of Flashpoints, especially the vanilla ones, can regularly crap out if you have a pet spawned.
Last but not least, you need to respawn your pet manually after every planet to station, station to planet, ship to station, ship to planet, etc... just gets annoying real quick.
