Tactics is pretty good but hard to get the hang of (still easier than Plasmatech though). As others suggested you would better start off as a commando (gunnery spec) as this is the most beginner firendly you can get as a trooper. I have a Tactics vanguard and I enjoy playing him very much and I also have a Pyrotech powertech which is still fun but way harder to learn than Tactics (Advanced Prototype for powertechs). Also gunnery does decent damage (but the nature of both adv classes is different, as commando is ranged and vanguard is melee). In the beggining you should favour playing ranged classes because they are easier to do combat with (which is another factor pointing to commando)
