Why do I need to pay for basic stuff like name changes?

Most of the stuff in the Cartel Market is mostly cosmetic but one day I wanted to change my toons name and I found out you have to have 10$ worth of cartel coins (1000cc) to get a name change. Wtf? Can someone explain why basic stuff like that requires money?

Requires money in every mmo. There was once 1 free namechange with subscription. Not sure if that reward still is there. (Subscribers can check if they still have a free namechange here : https://account.swtor.com/user/account/character/rename )

If you want to be remain cheap though and have patience : add a security key to your account, this gives 100 cc per month when you keep it active.

update: My mistake. I was given one free name change for my veteran status. Didn't read the fine print.

Like Drakira said. Add the security key, but it'll take 10 months before you have the coins for a name change. No way around paying some money for fast acquisition of Cartel Coins. I subscribe $14.99 per month for 500CC+100CC for authentication app. 600CC per month. The game also allows us to gain CC from certain activities while playing, but not much.

because if not then everyone would change their name every week, and it would abused by people looking to harass others players

the stupid and his money will always be seperated...
i guess there are so many stupid people typing wrong names
or they got blacklisted and want to change name
so there is a oppurtunity here to make money of it..

Cant understand why people always think game developers want our best
and never want to exploit us.

I'm not sure I've seen an mmo that allows free name changes...It would be a tool for people who just want to be jerks then change their name...daily or weekly...

I'm not sure changing names every week would work. My understanding is the account/legacy name will be ignored, not the character name. Even if the harasser changes their legacy name, they are still banned from interacting with the other player.

The only time I've ever seen a free name change was when a game merged servers and you ended up with 2 or more characters with the same name and 1 got to keep it and all the rest had to change their names.

The only online game that I know that lets you change your name freely is GTA Online and it just once per YEAR.

If you really want to change your name for free how about simply deleting the character, input the name you prefer, then level up the character as per normal? Is it honestly that difficult to figure out? Or just pick an out-of-the-ordinary, creative, non-meme, and unoffensive character name to begin with and just stick with it. Do also keep in mind that the game has been around for years so a lot of the "best" names were taken a long time ago and you will just have to get imaginative and think outside-the-box to get something close enough to the character name you like. Honestly though, sometimes it's just best to alter something the game's random name generator comes up with so you can get to playing that much faster.
