Credit cap - You won't be able to buy most things as the economy is significantly out of range of this cap. So cosmetics, etc. are going to be rather limited in accessibility without going through hoops to get around the cap via manual trading, etc.
General UI/cosmetics/character slot issues. Base F2P really doesn't give you that many hotbars, character slots, outfit designer slots, etc. - Combine with above issue, where most of the unlocks for these cost over the credit cap...
Only access to a certain part of the story.
Expansion access is included as a part of the sub fee (permanent, though, even if you stop paying.) so you won't have access to the ENTIRE story - That said, you can easily make your first character on each faction last 100+ hours and each subsequent character can easily reach the 50+ hour mark just for class story if you don't skip dialogue, etc. (8 unique base game stories, 2 unique stories (each faction) for some of the expansions.) It's not like there's a "small" amount of game to experience, it's just that you won't have access to all of it.
Now for the big one.
If you're a MMO player looking to do MMO things...
You really won't.
Most non-basic group content has some form of restrictions (weekly limit or outright zero access), as well as end-game content straight up not being accessible really at all.
Without paying for a sub at least once, you're not going to have access to the newest expansion, which means you won't have access to actual end-game, Operations (raids) are straight up zero access to a F2P without perhaps a temp pass if those are a thing still.
- Basically, the "MMOey MMO stuff" is mostly off-limits to a F2P player. So if that's the main reason you want to play the game... be aware of that.
What you can do, summed up.
Experience all 8 unique base game class stories.
Experience the entirety of the earlier expansions' stories.
Experience the base game faction stories.
Experience base-level group content.
This easily results in potentially hundreds of hours of content entirely for free.
And that's not even including the ability to replay storylines for alternate endings and events, due to alignment options and dialogue choices actually having some differing levels of impact on storylines. (most notably the imperial agent story, I'd have to say.)
Just be aware that your normal MMO end-game content is heavily restricted, and there's a lot of various additional restrictions that may make the game a little slower or restrictive than if you were a sub or even just a preferred (ex-sub/...certain amount spent on the cartel market?)
I'd still very much say it's worthwhile to play F2P, particularly if you enjoy star wars.
Just be aware that this isn't like certain other F2P games (like, say, warframe) where you totally could play the entirety of the game without paying a cent and never really suffer any restrictions by doing that.
If you decide you want to play it more like an MMO and less like a single player game once you've finished a story or two, then you may feel the pressure to subscribe so you can start wearing better gear, doing harder content, and making more money.
It's a backward as.s system to design a game from the ground up for the potential of player subscriptions rather than creating a good, feature complete game with proper writing from the get-go - like a Kotor 3.
Your mileage will vary on how invested you want to be. At the end of the day, the less you give in to their subscription, the stronger you become.
