No.

it's pay to play. Think of the f2p as more of a trial and you won't get frustrated.

You can do all the stories absolutely free. Not a single cent. That in itself is a ton of hours.

Short answer no. Long answer check https://www.reddit.com/r/swtor/wiki/f2p nice comparison between F2P, preferred and sub
No P2W here, the only thing you actualy pay for is the TRUE ENDGAME, wich is Fashion. Or do you think my White Lightsaber crystal makes me stronger than ANY OTHER COLORED ONE? Not realy. after they killed of the leveling of those crystals that is. Back then, it was "p2w" as the crystal was lvl 10, with lvl 60 stats on it. Thats gone for good.

And yes, its more a trial with F2P, nothing more. Think of it the same as FF XIV did. Its F2P to a degree, not the 100% game. THats still an ♥♥♥ one.

You can actually have nice gear with f2p or preferred as long as you dont think that expensive=looks amazing cheap= looks bad

I agree with Kin of the stars, you actually get a lot from the Free to Play aspect of the game. Then when you've gotten really far into the story you can sub if you like the game. Honestly it's worth a try. :lunar2020ratinablanket:

Im at lvl 27 rn havent paid nothing yet, but I will end up subscribing because without subscription your restricted from accessing many chat channels, and many other things, but by the looks of it a player could finish the whole game(Excluding expansion packs) without paying a dime

Oh and im dueling against subscribers several levels higher then me, and winning often, so def. dont see no ptw aspect of it yet, skill based imo

They reduce your xp rates for being F2p, you cant equip purple gear(last time i played), you have limited storage and space on everything, you have limited character spots( i think it was 2 character you could have for f2p), Main thing for me is your limited on how much PVP you can QUE for and same for PVE DUNGEONS and stuff. I think it was like 5 or 10 games a week you can que for.
A lot of people says its not p2w but it kind of is, you get soo cucked on the f2p aspect, now if you look at this game as a f2p star war story play through, you can 100% find something of value in that.

Let me correct a few items for you. You are one of the many people who confuse free-to-play, pay-to-play and pay-to-win, which was the original question.
  • you are not reduced in XP rate, you just don't get the experience bonus of subscribers and you do not get rested XP. You still get ample XP doing only purple missions meaning you're not getting behind.
  • yes you cannot use artifact gear. This does not block you from playing the game, nor from gearing up at all (heroic boxes return blue items).
  • You have less character slots, less storage slots, money cap than subscribers / preferred players - NONE of these block you from playing. This is not "p2w". You can also delete characters to make space for new ones.
  • Your limit to queue for yourself is 10 in PvP and PvE; how is this pay-to-win exactly? That is pay-to-play: you want to play more of this specific game item, subscribe. (there are ways around this anyway)

If this game was pay-to-win, you would absolutely suck at PvP. But you know it's not: it's a skill based system. f2p do not have "worse stats" than subscribers. The difference between blue and purple gear becomes negligible in PvP due to the boosting system.

If people want a guide or list for the differences between f2p/sub/pref, check the reddit link above or swtorista's guide:
