General chat moderation.
Honestly,

With the influx of new players and the regular people just enjoying the game, the general chat could be a real tool to help out, give away tips and tricks, answer any newcomer questions, group-up for heroics/WB, trading, who the hell knows what else, there's so much i'm still unaware-of, being new myself.

But currently, the state of the chat is plain and simply terrible, in that order;
  • Dromund Kaas
  • Republic/Imperial fleet
  • Coruscant
  • All starting planets (Tython, Ord Mantell, Korriban, Hutta)

75% of the time, it consist of;
  • Politic
  • Racist or female jokes
  • Religion
  • Trolls throwing random or off-topics answers

It is non-stop racial slurs, homophobic outbursts and female degradation, politics debate, etc, at certain time frames.

Reporting won't do much, I assume someone has to reported "x" amount of time before it even gets any attention, and most people won't bother, they just ignore the chat tab, ignoring won't solve anything, many new players have to cope with that pile of **** just to be able to get ANY help whatsoever.

I've played my share of MMO's in my lifetime and NEVER, never have I seen such a polluted and disgusting chat, are people that bored or simply mentally deficient - Starforge server.

I DARE YOU ! I dare you, to hire a moderator for 24 hours and let us know how many people have been muted temporarily(or permanently?) from the "General" chat.

For the love of the Star wars:The Old Republic community, and to enhance everyone experience, swtor owners have to do something, they are very active in steam apparently, they just added achievement to many of their games, and added the new [..] Play.

Thank you for reading, and have a nice day folks.

Bump that thread if you endorse the idea !

Reporting players tends to work pretty well. In most cases it doesn't take much to get them muted for a while. I've barely played at all since the Steam release but back when I was more of a regular, gold sellers barely lasted a couple of minutes before they'd get silenced. I imagine it would be the same for other forms of rulebreaking.

I haven't actually played an MMO with good chat moderation. I've played MMOs that handle reports pretty well (as SWTOR does), but they all still rely on player reports and don't have someone actively monitoring chat. What games have you played that have more active moderation?
SWTOR doesn't handle reports well. On rare occasion, annoying players may get squelched for 24 hours or so. The problem is that most people simply have chat turned off since no one wants to ignore anyone (as it could effect their ability to group), so what you can end up with at times is a chat literally full of trolls and not enough people with chat actually open to report them. Even half of Swtorista's chat guide is just about having creative ways to turn chat off or hide it better because chat is full of "downright nasty" people about as smart as "bantha poodoo".
A game that handles reports well would be FFXIV. You won't catch too many players making complete fools of themselves like people in SWTOR:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2108926853

To name a few, you've got *Warframe, Runescape, and Path of Exile that have great in-game moderation despite their massive player bases. You also have to understand that MMORPGs are of a "dying" genre, so many games with less than 1k players aren't even worth the effort of moderating. Of the more popular games that do lack moderation, like Elder Scrolls Online and SWTOR, their in-game chat have really bad reputations amongst the players themselves. Check the official forums of either games and you can find complaints about the chat and the majority of users agreeing about how toxic and useless it is. The fact that people in this community commonly have to say "turn of chat" and that there's even guides that recommend doing so is quite damning.

*Warframe's moderation is good for the most part, but it does have some problem with the mods themselves being overly political and causing unique, and unnecessary problems that can... trap people into accidental week long chat bans. It's not really that bad once you familiarize yourself with these unique rules. Personally, I prefer this over zero official moderation at all.

Snowflakes... snowflakes everywhere... I am REALLY offended, that they are offended, can someone ban them to make me happy again, because if not, it will make me offended even more.

So you bascially want to ban people for wishing to have a much more supportive and helpful general chat, minus all the junk that's mentionned in the OP, you know [...] the ONLY place where EVERY SINGLE (random)players can ACTUALLY CONNECT.

You better be offended by your own post.

have you ever heard word "sarcasm"? oh, snowflakes get offended even by sarcasm, thats offends meeee

now to be little bit more formal, fair and not trolling:

have you ever seen old xroads chat in wow?
have you ever seen what happens in lotro when you mention "ananas on pizza" on global chat?
have you ever seen chat in L2?

if you dont like not-so-politicaly-correct jokes, just ignore them, also, personaly i have usualy seen helpfull players on starting planets and only DK is xroads of SWTOR.

IF SWTOR needs something regarding chat, some /advice channel would be more helpfull than restrictions and censorship (i need to say that there is difference between bad joke, sarcasm and plain and straight racism and that stuff, that i usualy report, but most of the time i have seen only bad jokes and sarcasm), its allways better way to give something than take something.

Now this part is just my opinion: i think that biggest issue (as part of corporate management class i hate word "problem" :P ) of SWTOR is F2P, and most of those immature and dumb players are in starting planets, DK and fleet, the closer player is to endgame, the better chat and player behavior gets.
First time? Welcome to mmos. You'll get a workout on your ignore list fast if this kinda stuff bothers you. It's honestly pretty tame compared to some of the Stormwind general chats I've seen in the past.

SWTOR can't even afford to fix bugs from 5 years ago, they definetly can't afford to hire a chat moderator full time.

Walking around goldshire on moonguard is a laugh most of the time, especially if you have some RP addons to read peoples bios. Half the characters in the INN are selling onlyfans and private snapchats lmfao.
15 years ago those Goldshire and Crossroad chat was full with spam but still more civil then anytime today.
Only thing people got triggered by was when people asked questions about quests. Of course you'd see that question 100 times a day.
People bringing up old, dead games as reference to defend current chat is pretty cringe. It's not the same and you know it.

These kids aren't original or funny. It's the same repeated crap over and over. Things like saying the n word in various ways, repeatedly saying "Trump2020", or saying covid is fake.

Hell, if it actually were a decade ago, people would have at least been creative enough to make racist remarks about aliens (with in-universe words), compare actual politics to in-game politics (something like "Vote Saresh"), and say something along the lines of "rhakghouls aren't real". That's not what these little kids are doing though.

It has nothing to do with "freedom of speech". This crap is spam. It's even more of a turn off than gold sellers. You at least expect those in every MMO. Not this.

Turn off chat.
Turning off chat in an "MMO" to accommodate some losers that have never told an original joke in their life isn't a solution.

I've seen new players asking for directions at the fleet and end up harassed and called a "Karen" when she/he called them jerks. By the time I sent them a message, they'd already logged out. This crap happens all the time because these kids are allowed to do whatever they want due to lack of proper moderation. It's no wonder actual new players quit so quickly when the game is filled with dark lords of the cringe.
Again, use ignore snowflake. If you are bothered by so irrelevant thing as few toxic players...change hobby. I'm starting to think you are trolling. Nobody can be this special

If it were as simple as just using ignore, I doubt the OP would have made a thread about it.

It's also ironic that you're calling someone a snowflake while getting offended at the notion that SWTOR's chat is particularly bad. It takes a special kind of snowflake to not want to get rid of this kind of spam.

Right click the name of the offensive person in chat and Report Spam. It takes surprisingly few people doing this to get the player squelched from chat. Squelching is legacy-wide -- and the squelch timer increases with each squelching!

Avoiding an uproar from the *ahem* special community, while giving the rest of the playerbase a useful tool. :cozybethesda:

Mostly true, those players tend to be the lazy kind, they like to type... A LOT.
Then they enter groupfinder, you know, once a day :
[insert name]:Rofl, this so easy !
[insert name] rush into the mobs with 5-15% health.
[insert name] has died.
[insert name]: Wtf happened, huh, so bad.
[insert name] left the group.

Interesting to know that's worth a shot, if they get way out of hand. I never bothered reporting anything else than goldsellers.
maybe they should add

esrb
"Users Interact

Indicates possible exposure to unfiltered/uncensored user-generated content, including user-to-user communications and media sharing via social media and networks"

this game is designated as teen

though i think the mmo aspect of it suggest it as most if not all have chat and/or voice.
Wow, people can never handle negative responses, they just report them, i always say, ignore it and move on. If you let words offend you or hurt you or affect you in any way, then its honestly your fault for letting it.
