General chat moderation.
Honestly,

With the influx of new players and the regular people just enjoying the game, the general chat could be a real tool to help out, give away tips and tricks, answer any newcomer questions, group-up for heroics/WB, trading, who the hell knows what else, there's so much i'm still unaware-of, being new myself.

But currently, the state of the chat is plain and simply terrible, in that order;
  • Dromund Kaas
  • Republic/Imperial fleet
  • Coruscant
  • All starting planets (Tython, Ord Mantell, Korriban, Hutta)

75% of the time, it consist of;
  • Politic
  • Racist or female jokes
  • Religion
  • Trolls throwing random or off-topics answers

It is non-stop racial slurs, homophobic outbursts and female degradation, politics debate, etc, at certain time frames.

Reporting won't do much, I assume someone has to reported "x" amount of time before it even gets any attention, and most people won't bother, they just ignore the chat tab, ignoring won't solve anything, many new players have to cope with that pile of **** just to be able to get ANY help whatsoever.

I've played my share of MMO's in my lifetime and NEVER, never have I seen such a polluted and disgusting chat, are people that bored or simply mentally deficient - Starforge server.

I DARE YOU ! I dare you, to hire a moderator for 24 hours and let us know how many people have been muted temporarily(or permanently?) from the "General" chat.

For the love of the Star wars:The Old Republic community, and to enhance everyone experience, swtor owners have to do something, they are very active in steam apparently, they just added achievement to many of their games, and added the new [..] Play.

Thank you for reading, and have a nice day folks.

Bump that thread if you endorse the idea !

Reporting players tends to work pretty well. In most cases it doesn't take much to get them muted for a while. I've barely played at all since the Steam release but back when I was more of a regular, gold sellers barely lasted a couple of minutes before they'd get silenced. I imagine it would be the same for other forms of rulebreaking.

I haven't actually played an MMO with good chat moderation. I've played MMOs that handle reports pretty well (as SWTOR does), but they all still rely on player reports and don't have someone actively monitoring chat. What games have you played that have more active moderation?
SWTOR doesn't handle reports well. On rare occasion, annoying players may get squelched for 24 hours or so. The problem is that most people simply have chat turned off since no one wants to ignore anyone (as it could effect their ability to group), so what you can end up with at times is a chat literally full of trolls and not enough people with chat actually open to report them. Even half of Swtorista's chat guide is just about having creative ways to turn chat off or hide it better because chat is full of "downright nasty" people about as smart as "bantha poodoo".
A game that handles reports well would be FFXIV. You won't catch too many players making complete fools of themselves like people in SWTOR:

To name a few, you've got *Warframe, Runescape, and Path of Exile that have great in-game moderation despite their massive player bases. You also have to understand that MMORPGs are of a "dying" genre, so many games with less than 1k players aren't even worth the effort of moderating. Of the more popular games that do lack moderation, like Elder Scrolls Online and SWTOR, their in-game chat have really bad reputations amongst the players themselves. Check the official forums of either games and you can find complaints about the chat and the majority of users agreeing about how toxic and useless it is. The fact that people in this community commonly have to say "turn of chat" and that there's even guides that recommend doing so is quite damning.

*Warframe's moderation is good for the most part, but it does have some problem with the mods themselves being overly political and causing unique, and unnecessary problems that can... trap people into accidental week long chat bans. It's not really that bad once you familiarize yourself with these unique rules. Personally, I prefer this over zero official moderation at all.

It's been like this for the past 8 years and it ain't gonna change. Just ignore general chat most of the time. Most people don't ask for help/tips in general chat, instead they prompt for Guild chat if they are in one.

Just report and ignore them, as you said, if enough people are disturbed by it, something will be done, but if it's one or two reports out of the 80+ usually on said planets, then you can understand why, surely?

Secondly; join a guild, you'll likely never use General for anything other than recruiting or game-related talk.

Reports seem to be working to stop gold/credit sellers. Saw one last night on Tython. It was only able to send 3 messages before it was muted by player reports. For the other stuff, not enough players agree what isn't allowed or not. A lot of things are technically against the ToS, but Bioware won't do anything unless enough players report. This is how most MMOs work though. It requires player reports before the company will do anything.

You're absolutely right. SWTOR general chat is definitely the most cancerous of any MMO I've ever seen. The lack of moderation is very apparent, hence their boldness to continue trolling chat relentlessly.

And the sad part is that I've never seen the Fleet or Nar Shaada's chat not be complete trash. You'd think Leafyishere ordered his simps to do their thing in SWTOR ("literally" the same edgy, outdated humor).

Welcome to MMOs. Stop being a snowflake. Ignore function is there for a reason.

The things people chat about in SWTOR would get people chat or account banned permanently in most MMOS. It sounds like you're new to MMOs if you think that's normal. :lilimok:

Well, you want free speech, you get free speech. Some players just turn gen chat off. While a moderator team would be nice, as a Hong Kong resident who is surrounded by Chinese games and their politics I'd say this may be preferable than the alternative. Some western companies are indeed self-censoring to please China, because of its big market.

Anyway, I've had some good times - last time I was on Coruscant they were talking about Force, then someone joked that Foce is all about rocks. Sith crush rocks. Jedi lift rocks. Then someone asked about midi-chlorian. (S)he answered that midi-chlorian is in the rock, so that the more kidney stone you have, the stronger you are in the force. The chat haven't made me laugh like that for a while.

Just ignore the chat when it doesn't suit your taste. You can toggle it off and I do that half the time.

Game is played by a lot of underage kids or very young players.
I've done FPs run where people would snap at each other for the slightest reason and start insulting each other over a small joke!
They probably wont get rid of such people if they pay their monthly fee.

I'll put in as much effort as you did, answering.
Snowflake ? Wrong.
Ignore ? = Less people to team up(GF), they might be slightly(a lot?) dumb at conversing but good in flashpoints/ops, you never know.

Perfect point.

That said, Steam forum guidelines are much stricter than swtor in-game chat... well, the latter has none, it's not really hard to beat right ? It's a zoo.

Care to name a game that isn't dead and actually has active moderation?

Yeah well that is a private server. I can tell you the original WAR game had
less moderation. XD

What is the difference? When lineage 2 was relevant it didn't had strict moderation. At it fueled dramas and PvP. Then snowflakes came.

Same with wow. In ancient times hate on opposite faction was normal. Today is bannable offence and PvP in wow is dead. Dramas were always parts of MMOs. But today killing player in game is offensive for some people... I mean... Ganking is offensive for snowflakes

You're coming off as a massive snowflake yourself. You'd rather have drama than focus on playing the game. If you want drama you should just go tweet something. :seriousboss:

SWTOR's player base is dwindling again despite the Steam release. I'm sure there's many factors associated with that, and I'm willing to bet a toxic, annoying chat is a contributor of it. Doesn't help that the only less moderated games people can name are dead, dying, or private servers.
