You probably have to reinstall because swtor website uses streaming launcher while Steam uses non-streaming launcher. Anyways, once you get it working on Steam, you can buy Steam wallet gift cards and use that money to buy SWTOR subscription. Another option is buying Amazon gift cards and use that money to buy SWTOR digital game time. You get a code in a the mail that you add to swtor.com site after logging in your account. I haven't bought game time cards for SWTOR. I've heard they don't have good supply. Sometimes they are there; other times stores don't seem to have them.
The codes from Amazon you get right on the order confirmation page. You can also go into order history to look up the code if you leave the page. Maybe they send email too, but I don't remember. The Steam gift cards you just add to your Steam account. Then you can buy the 60-day game time option. Subscription options probably require active payment on your account, but the one time 2 month game time does not. I don't know if codes expire, but sometimes a code is accidentally used (pretty rare) and you have to contact SWTOR support to get a replacement code. It's never happened to me before, but I've heard it happened to others.
Also note that if you have to pay taxes online, you will need more than the asking price to buy the game time. So for example, the 60 day game time might say $29.99, but ends up be $31.30 or something with taxes, so you need to make sure the money you put in Steam or Amazon is enough to cover taxes (depends on where you live). If you pay sales tax in physical stores, you probably have to pay sales tax online too.
Yeah it's confusing. the initial page shows the physical card but you can click the buttons on the page for other options. Here's links to the digital codes:
