Try large scale world pvp. It'll be teardropping.
No, I haven't had issue with corrupted files with the Steam version - the hours to days long download is believed to be done in order to dodge file corruptions caused by BitRaider (which offers 30mins download.) I have three swtor installations, one for each type, and they all works fine. If you click launcher settings you can ask it to verify files.
I think the files are corrupt...
I am not on Star Forge but I think the lag would be more pronounced there given the higher number of players. Apparently most new players pick it because it is first on server list. Too late with randomised list now.
Edit: Switching to or away from Steam will not solve it. Either increase server and network capacity (fat chance), or wait for the new players to lost interest and the performance will gradually "recover". Consider transfer a character or start anew on a less populated server. Some EU/US players go as far as playing on the "wrong" region to dodge the busy hours.
Also note that lag spike is not fps drop. FPS drop makes your game freeze. You can't turn your view. UI does not animate. Abilities don't light up when you mouseover them. This is usually a problem on your side, for example when your CPU can't catch up or the UI crashed and is re-initialising.
You can turn your view and even run around when you are experiencing a lag spike. The UI respond to you, but up to a point your abilities cease to go out. If you run far enough you will hit an invisible wall. FPS is stable. This is a server/network issue, rarely your problem if your local connection is stable.
Hardware is your crutch, gotta get the 3090 and a 5950X. Anything lower and you get buttcheek fps
There is one thing that can make it better. Switch from an Intel processor to an AMD Ryzen processor. Ryzen processors handle the single core stress through the bad game engine much better than Intel processors. The difference is quite substantial, especially when many other players are around.
I switched over to a SSD and a Ryzen 7 two years ago to decrease loading times and increase performance for PvP and the difference is night and day.
In unranked PVP warzones my frames drop to about 20, even as low as 15 during massive fights with everyone using their 1 million CC abilities at the same time. And it's not like I have the worst PC in the world. Running a i5, 16gb ram and gtx 1060. Really makes PVP hard to do, which is a shame because I enjoy it.
