Yeah, it's very annoying. The lack of a second playthrough and Chaos 100 taking too long just hurts the difficulty aspect even more. The game is even easier in multiplayer, so I prefer to play solo as that is actually balanced; it's weird as the other games had decent player scaling, so maybe they just tuned it down here.

One thing you can do on new characters is do story only and ignore side missions and collectables as Wargtooth Shallows has a minimum level of 18 (presumably this was done to encourage secondary class usage as the previous mission gives you access to that feature). I am not sure if other story areas after it have minimum levels, as I run a specific route that gets me to level 40 in time for the final fight with the Dragon Lord, so haven't noticed a minimum level for those areas. It is very easy to get to Wargtooth Shallows being level 14, the lowest I managed is 12 on new characters. It's not a great solution, but at least it makes the early game a bit more interesting.

What difficulty are you running in?

Maybe host a coop game with a high lev character and then join it, and then just park the high lev?

the hardest difficulty the game let me select from the start, got a bit past getting my subclass and and just got to bored at the the fact my pets were killing everything before i could even shoot, so i restarted without pets and i still find every fight is a brief bore of things just dying unless i handicap the hell out of myself by equipping crappy gear, but then that utterly removes any joy at all for finding good items, and only sorta works, the math in this game is weird and uses all kinds of secret modifiers, good for them on that, like for real.

oh cool a rare gold thing my level, maybe in 20 levels will be weak enough to use.

After finishing the game and a second run of Chaos levels I can with all honesty say the only times I've died were because I jumped into an "instant death" zone.. I think I saw the "fight for your life" screen only 3-5 times.
