Finished the game, some things to say
I decided I had enough of the game some time ago, but I finished it because it's not cheap, especially on this side of the planet. With that in mind, forgive my ESLness. What initially got to me was the writing. But it's a looter shooter so I could've just ignored the story and shoot, loot to my heart's content amirite? Why get my knickers tangled up over the writing?

Because it got in the way of the shooting and looting. A large number of the quests, main or otherwise, involved the NPC going on and on and on before the objective updates. Perhaps in an attempt to make side quests more interesting, we're now subject to various long segments of walking, talking, and random things that aren't conducive to me shooting baddies asap. Not sure if my memory is becoming crap, but I don't recall something like this in the previous games. Sure, there were the story segments in the main missions, but side missions were straight to the point, even if you had to listen to the npcs talk via echo.

Then there's outdated mechanics that serve no real purpose other than to waste your time. Like the inventory limit. The inventory is so small it constantly gets full before you can reach the next set of vending machines, even if you drop all your money into increasing inventory space. There's no reason for this. Well maybe there is, but no good ones. The inventory itself is also incredibly outdated. Why can we still sell equipped gear? It shouldn't show up in the sell tab at all, same goes for favorited gear. And instead of having to manually set everything as trash to sell quickly, why not just have an option to sell everything that isn't equipped or favorited? And remove the trash marker altogether, so gears are either favorite or not, and everything that isn't can be quickly sold.

The humanoid AIs are getting less and less fun to fight. I know making them hide behind cover and dodging makes them seem more clever, but in a game like this it's just annoying, You fire a spell with a long cooldown and the AI just reads it, then sidesteps your spell, wasting it. There was no skill component to that. It just reads your input/move and dodged it. It's not like I could have led the shot or anything. Them trying to run and hide behind cover isn't fun for the player too. More often than not they all just scatter and stand forever behind some pillar, and you have to go chase them down one by one like you're playing hide and go seek or something.

Anyway, that's all I have to say for now. I'm not looking for validation, or people to agree with me, it's just something I had to get off my chest, being a fan of the series since the first game. More might come to mind later.

I agree whole hardheartedly this game broke my heart
I know the burches so it really hit me hard.
i keep telling people this isnt a real full game its a DLC for bl3 standalone
20-30hrs MAX and the ai is MORONIC the maps are tiny the gear is stupid and skills suck

think this way.. BL2 tiny tina dlc is almost free now. AND its superior in EVERY WAY
and longer
oh and this game has ZERO replay value
if you look at bl2 game play is about the same 40 ish hrs BUT the completionists 156HRs thats due to replay and online dlcs
all that is NOT in this game

AND gearbox mods here on steam keep removing ALL threads where anyone says ANYTHING bad about this game

money hungry piles of dung they are

All BLs got the same long dialogue which is where the games deliver its humor and punchlines. I guess we remember stuff differently. I like the fact that they replace the openworld driving section and replace it with overworld boardgame mechanic, I hate driving.

The main problem is reduction of gunplay for sniper and emphasize on spell and melee. Very obvious in most arena style map design.

AI taking cover is pretty standard. Inventory management could be better but i have no problem with inventory size.

the AI is not ok
its bugged
even shroom buddy gets stuck or there are invisible borders they wont cross and turn around RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU
the guns suck people
the game doesnt show what zone area you will die walking out onto a wood platform BOOF die
the same dialog no.. bl3 never had and good dialog.
BL1 and 2 but not pre se and not bl3

the odd bit IS that all voice actors did 7+ voices each
its cost effective but, lame as you can tell its the same person each time
will arnet has about 22 voices in this game so far, to my current count
ash is close with 17

so the dialog is great! story too but no this game is for the people real BL was to hard for
those people I am not

They always had long dialogue, but most of the time you weren't forced to listen to the whole thing before they update your objectives. Unless a physical gag was part of it.

Your point about melee being emphasized brings up a good point. It feels very shoehorned. It's weak, slow, clunky, and doesn't mesh well with the gunplay. There's so much emphasis for it in every facet of the game even though it's poorly implemented. They should have at least been proper weapons that went into the regular weapon slot, with LMB, RMB, and quick melee at least being different moves. Some kind of basic melee system to go with it.

I usually don't mind AI taking cover and playing defensively in FPS games, it's par for the course like you said, but I feel like it doesn't really work in a game like Borderlands. I was trying the Chaos Chambers and in one map they just kept spawning really far away and hid there. It was more frustrating than anything looking for them one by one.

The inventory thing can be subjective, but I feel that it's quite reductive to limit how much loot you can pick up in a game about picking up loot.

was very excited for this game at the reveal. i played it release week on ps5 and enjoyed every second of itr but then i beat the game and it took about 20 mins till i realized all the chaos chamber is is the random encounters but with a high loot incentive. really disappointing that the only way to enjoy the story again is to make a brand new character which makes all that gear u grind for feel pointless. cant go through the game again, no raid bosses or anything challenging to motivate you to spend that time grinding for your build. felt good in bl2 and 3 to grind and then go to bosses at the highest level OP level, mayhem level and then just TEARING those health bars of bosses to pieces. no such thing here. i like it, but its so shallow that its sad :/

Been awhile since I played, but it feels very similar to how BL3 and TPS were - prioritizing what loot I pick up, just grabbing the 'good stuff' (legend, purple, everything above a certain selling price, etc).

Just like the ARPGs that inspired BL in the first place. Same thing I do in Diablo, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn. . . so, yeah. Seems fine to me. /shrug
(and this game, at least, added the pseudo-"town portal" system, so it's a bit easier to offload the junk you grabbed)

I've got to say, I honestly don't understand getting so invested in a game. It's just a game. /shrug

I consider this to be the worst game in the Borderlands franchise.

It is a bare minimum effort from corporate. It's just enough to feel like a Borderlands game. Just enough to want you to buy the next Borderlands game.

Unlike all other Borderlands games which had at least 4 characters, you only need 3 characters in this one to experience all the game mechanics.

Unlike all other Borderlands games which had at least 3 skill trees, now you only get 2.

The amount of non-skippable dialogue that blocks progress until the dialogue is finished is clearly meant to pad the game length.

The combat, even on the hardest difficulty is so boring. Trash mobs and even "bosses" just melt. Combat encounters, where I spend more time trying to find something to kill, then actually shooting.

This is the first Borderlands game where I'm just trying to finish the game now so I can see if these Chaos Chambers offer any challenge whatsoever.

The writing is garbage and worse than BL3. BL3 characters were cringy, but at least the story had structure and direction. Tiny Tina's story has no structure or direction, just a mess of bits thrown together.

The only character I really liked from BL3 was Lorelei and now that voice actor is Paladin Mike, because the Borderlands universe is now a woke ideology landscape where seemingly every other character has to tell you about their sexual preference. That's predictable and boring. At least I liked one character in BL3, even Tiny Tina gets annoying, predictable and boring in this game.

Borderlands has always had cultural references, but this game takes that to the extreme by making numerous quest lines that are just copies of some other story line. That's lazy and not creative.

This is the reality of Gearbox. We are never going to get a BL2 again, ever. Instead of taking good ideas and putting them into a single game, they now take those good ideas and spread them over multiple games, because it makes more money.

The multiclass in this game is a deception that actually leaves you with fewer options and fewer skill trees. The only thing new about this game is the Overworld and while cute, it's boring and wears its welcome out fairly quickly.
The Nothing Man Jul 8, 2022 @ 12:02pm
its the 2nd worst bl3 is the worst
but yep i agree

to those that say its only a game..
so is life! so quit playing life! lol idiots abound

I thought pre-sequel was bad, but then the third came out. Man the obnoxious dialogue and fanservice that served no one of the actual playerbase stopped me to enjoy probably the whole franchise. Whatever story related mindset I had for the characters was straight out raped man. All the feminism yes yes we all get it, but did they really have to be so toxic about the whole social justice? Don't shove the politics up my throat man, I am here to shoot and loot, not think about how cosplay girls are somehow under represented in gaming. This ♥♥♥♥ I am not even buying, thanks for the reviews. I am so tired of this crap, writers and the publisher can suck ass. Franchise ruined and I honestly don't believe it is even recoverable at this point.

hey alright, nice english btw OP. Its pretty sad seeing the steady decline of this once amazing franchise. So much of what you complain about is just archaic game design philosophy that doesnt really work anymore due to the creep of quality video games.
km_md60 Jul 8, 2022 @ 3:31pm
And I forgot one weird thing. TTW still doesn't have loot filter. Seeing lootsplosion is good but there is difference between seeing just purple and orange loot and seeing loads of grey, green, blue, purple, and orange.

Probably one of my biggest grief after playing Grimdawn for so long.
The Nothing Man Jul 8, 2022 @ 4:45pm
your soo right all of you/us
no loot filter know why? because the game is to short thats why
this ISNT a BL game gearbox sayith
I laugh and then cry
watch real content in new season pass 2 and 3 only 59.99 each!

oo grimdawn ill play that
lemme say pre sequel I thought was the worst until bl3.. so bl3 is still the worst but then this game THEN presequel which to me is looking better due to epic fails
no epic pun meant

the pathing is TERRIBLE
again i will repeat I died now about 200 times walking out onto wood platforms
poof you died
respawn take cash
this should exist

then you have the opposite/antithesis which are invisible walls that prevent you from going forward on something like a mush room thats right there

f this game im so sad and angry at it
and I will be talking to the burches.. I have a feeling this wasnt planned to be a standalone game ever

THE WRITING ROCKS
The voice cast is amazing
but thats where it ends

can we get a spell to destroy gearbox?

The limited inventory space is what put me off on all borderlands games and holds me from buying this one. I absolutely hate having to throw away finds because i dont have space.
