Is there some sort of tutorial or something?
So I played maybe five minutes of this game but had no idea what I should be doing - I shoot the enemies, I run out of ammo, I die. It says "Reload" with no indication of... how to do that? Pressing random buttons while enemies eat me didn't seem to yield any progress, and I just kind of bailed after three tries or so. Does shooting/killing enemies on the beat regenerate ammo? Is there a button I didn't try that I should have? If there was a tutorial to explain any of these mechanics, I didn't see it.

If I haven't read anything about the game or dig around in the control settings, is there any part of the game that teaches you to play? Just curious.

On controller, RB reloads, on KBM press R. You have to reload on the beat or nothing will happen. You have infinite ammo. Practise before you fight any enemies to avoid panic.

Check your keys.. Should check keys in every game you play before you play. Reload is all you need. Which in 99.9% of games as stated above is defaulted to R.

The store states this is a rhythm game. So reloading and shooting must be done in rhythm.

Yes, the complete lack of tutorial and the way the game hides dash and checking your skills after you beat the first level are the player's fault. I like this game but man the devs are REALLY lazy about ramping up new players.

It doesn't hide your abilities, you just have to press the button that brings up the abilities screen. Which you can find in the same place as the button for reloading.
+1 for checking basic controls before you start playing a new game.

I play a lot of games, and most games these days will introduce the controls you need to know as you play - doesn't even need to be a tutorial, just a little prompt that shows up the first time you are out of ammo that says "Press R to reload" - honestly there's no reason it'd be more work to include that text instead of just "Reload" without any explanation how. I haven't played a game in a long time that did as little to introduce me to the game as BPM (maybe DF? but there the obscurity is almost part of the appeal). That's not to say it's a bad game! Every dev has to decide where to spend their limited time and resources. But I'm curious what % of gamers first read a manual or check the settings of a game before they dive in and start playing - I bet it's a relatively small %, but a high overlap with people who comment on Steam forum threads :-D

Try Ancestors: Humankind Odyssey. Oh boy.
I for one have made it a habit years ago that in every new game I play I check the settings for graphics settings in case I need to set that up (motion blur == instantly off), check audio to enable subtitles in case the game has heavy accents, lots of noise over dialogue or stuff like that and check basic controls, like movement. I do admit not to memorize all controls in games like Arma 3 cause yeah, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but stuff like move around, interact, attack, switch weapon, jump, crouch, etc. I always check before a new game.

Honestly, checking settings before jumping into a game is for the very dedicated players.
Any semi-casual player who just want to play for half an hour and enjoy some shooting won't be checking the settings and keybinding before giving the game a spin.

There should have been some form of tutorial on first play through, but there isn't. All it achieves is alienating new players.

First playhthrough tutorials are a horrible design. What if I just put the game down for 3 years, forget everything and then pick it back up? I can't do the tutorial, cause the game remembers I did it already years ago on my first playthrough? If there is a tutorial, it should be a different mode from the main run.

The first line of the description on the store page: BPM is a rhythm-action FPS rogue-like where you must shoot, jump and dodge to the beat of an epic rock soundtrack.

It's an FPS, what key usually reloads in those? Even mashing the key would probably have lead to you figuring it out.

I also put reload on right click.

Sounds weird at first but it helps when you're reloading and dodging at the same time.

Cheers,

Would love to play it as rogue-like FPS without all of rhythm-action BS

Sorry to say that is the core of the game. If you don't want a rhythm shooter, you are in the wrong place.

You can turn off "all the rhythm bs" in the settings. Which entirely defeats the purpose of the game, but it IS there.
