Um, a frigging lot, when the enemies move like crazy and your distance to them is going to vary.
High damage isn't a good enough tradeoff for me, since upgrading the damage stat is a high priority anyway and killing things is rarely the problem as opposed to dodging the incoming attacks.
Not to mention there are things like the Gauss Cannon in the game which does the highest damage of anything, but is hitscan, no firing delay.
On my strongest run, I was able to take out the final boss in six shots.
Sure, it's different. But learning how to handle each of the guns opens you up to so many more good items. More good items means more winning runs.
