But how far (best guess)? In my case torpedos are shot at max range which can take a few minutes. Noisemake don't live that long.
How far away would you move to the side? Or is hiding/misdirection the only option even if you have ~10 minutes time to evade even if the submarine cannot see you anymore?
Pun absolutely intended.
Passive sonar works by homing on amplitude. But it is difficult to do with receivers the size of a torpedo.
Torpedoes generally use active sonar which works quite differently. It sends out a ping and then waits for a return at that specific frequency, then heads in the direction of the return.
So a noisemaker isn't actually making a sound that the torpedo homes on, it is masking the sound of the echo return.
Knowing this should reveal how to use them. Make a screen, point your stern (or bow) in the direction of the incoming fish, try to be out of the torpedo's "detection cone" when it passes through.
And pray. Because it's a little timing, a little strategy, and 99% luck.
I had thought of them like flares. Bigger target = more important. In this case ~90° to the sider would make more sense. But as a "screen" behind and to the side is probably better.
Any idea how far (distance/angle) the cone of an active torpedo reaches approx.? I don't think i found this information in the encyclopedia.
Edit: I still am talking about the scenario that a submarines shoots its torpedo at a range of maybe ~15nm. So quit far away and these were only moving around 20 knots or so. Probably fired it because my ships sonars were active.
