Sonar Bouys - Intermittend mode?

Does anybody knwo what excatly "intermittend mode" on sonar buoys is? Does it mean it switches between above/below the layer? Or does it mean the buoys transmit for some time and the switch off and later back on? Maybe to make them last longer?

I finally figured it out. The first buoy is dropped below the layer the second above the third below the fourth above, etc..

Thank you very much for testing and the information. Thank you very much. So for a good "underwater net" I need the double amout of buoys now.
