What am I doing wrong when shooting down helicopters?
I don't get it. I used two AIM-54 rockets, two AIM-7 Sparrows, and two AIM-9L Sidewinders on one ♥♥♥♥♥♥ PL helicopter and still missed. Sometimes it only missed by a few meters
I had to use my guns on the F-14 to hit an ASW helicopter...

Is this a joke or realism?

You can't tell me that thing has better countermeasures than any other plane.

I guess the ammo used here IRl would cost more than the entire helo..

i have not had that happen yet. i do notice i have to fire a million harpoons at the same time to hit a russian ship. however its not the same for me. my countermeasures are crap in comparison. which is not even close to accurate. i have to overwhelm russia ships with harpoons to even get one to hit

All aircrafts in game can deploy flares that are similar to decoys or noise makers used on surface vessels and subs.

Game also default to Realistic for difficulty level. You can lower difficulty to make things easier.

According to Shaw's Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering, the rotors play havoc with radar-guided missiles because of the conflicting Doppler shift that it produces. IR-guided might be better, but unlike various jet fighters with exposed engine exhaust, helicopter exhaust is often somewhat hidden or dispersed by the airflow of the rotors. The AH-64 even has a specialized exhaust dispersion system called Black Hole to further reduce the effectiveness of IR-guided missiles and an IR jammer (AN/ALQ-144) known colloquially as the disco ball.

Try to move your planes to the same altitude as the helo before firing, that might help, especially with the sidewinders.

Aim 54s are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at the moment. It's just not against helis. I'm hoping missile/air to air refinement will be coming soon in future patches.

So helos are impervious to AA missiles. Man they must be dominating the skies right now and in past conflicts.. wait theyre shot down like flies. Theyre shot down so much that the US Air Force, Army nor Navy would even consider sending out helos against near peer adversaries, or if there's even a hint of intel about enemy AA capability in theatre.

Game's bugged, no need to invent bs to try to cover for it

This seems to be more noticeable since the latest patch(s). AIM 54s and AIM 7s cant seem to hit recon planes until you use most of the damn planes ammo. At least when I'm playing.
