It adds the Armored Box Launcher (ABL) Spruance to the game. USS MERRILL DD-976 was the test bed ship for the Tomahawk Missile ABL going to sea. Her conversion to a Tomahawk ABL Spruance took place between 20 October 1978 and 5 May 1979.
Developed for the USN as a modern anti-submarine warfare destroyer the Spruance-class is one of the most important platforms in the USN. 31 of these vessels provide modern weapons, combat systems, and helicopters to the USN on deployment globally.
The Spruance design is modular in nature, allowing for easy installation of entire subsystems within the ship. Although originally designed for anti-submarine warfare, seven vessels: Comte de Grasse, Merrill, Conolly, John Rodgers, Leftwich, Deyo, and Ingersoll were upgraded with the installation of a pair of four-round Armored Box Launchers (ABL) for the Tomahawk cruise missile, one each side of the ASROC launcher, giving them a longer range anti-ship and land attack capability. This Mod adds the following ABL Spruance class ships to the game:
Comte de Grasse DD-974
Merrill DD-976
Conolly DD-979
John Rodgers DD-983
Leftwich DD-984
Deyo DD-989
Ingersoll DD-990
Thank you! I enjoyed creating it.
You're most welcome!
Awesome!
Thanks everyone for the kind comments.
USS MERRILL is a ship I actually served aboard. I was aboard her as an Ensign during the summer of 1996, while she was under the command of CMDR (Later VADM) Timothy V. McCully, USN.
I was in command of a division of 25 U.S. Naval Sea Cadets, from Arizona, who were assigned to their summer, at sea, training aboard her. She was the first Skimmer (Surface Ship) I had worked with. All of my previous times doing summer training with the USNSCC had been at Naval Submarine Base, New London, in Connecticut. I had spent the past two summer training cycles teaching at SUBSCHOL, with USS PHILADELPHIA SSN-690, and USS ANNAPOLIS SSN-760. (Which is why I did the Los Angels Flt II and Flt III Mods. I have great memories of those boats!)
The Captain, Officers and Crew of USS MERRILL welcomed me aboard, and gave me grief about being a Bubblehead, commenting about how I might get seasick, since Destroyers can't go deep to avoid the weather, etc. They also constantly reminded me, that I now honored with being in the presence of Destroyer-men and Surface Warfare Gods!
I had a blast that cruise, and made some friends that I am still in contact with today. One of them was LT (later CMDR) Jim Diamond, USN, who I knew from the Naval Reserve Center in Phoenix, AZ. He kindly took me under his wing and made me feel right at home. He, and LT(JG) Dietze, even got me assigned to the "highly important and honorary" duty of Mail Buoy Watch. :)
Despite the friendly ribbing , as I worked alongside these men, I came to respect and admire them as much as I did my Submariner buddies I learned a lot about their approach to ASW and ASuW. It was a great learning experience, and Jim Diamond and I still get together several times a year and have breakfast, or lunch. His wife and family and my wife and family have now been friends for over 30 years.
So as VADM Timothy V. McCully, USN, used to say, "SALVO REGARDS!"
I hope you all come to love the ABL Spruance class (Sprucan's) as much as I have.
LTJG Howard C. Beam
Glad I could help!
