NO P2W...
Base game is free, expansions are buy to play, seasons can be bought or grinded for.

PS
Since you are a new player, just follow your main story quests 'till you hit lvl 80.

Only things on the shop are cosmetic and utility. But it also depends on what you consider "P2W".

There are tools with limited uses that are purchased with in-game gold and are used to gather materials before they run out of uses and you have to buy more. You also need to buy an upgraded version of each tool every 10-20 levels. But on the shop, they have tools for purchase with real money that have unlimited uses and can be used at every level. There is also a level boost that will boost you to max level, but won't complete any content (like Story).

In my opinion, a game is only P2W if you are able to buy something with real money that will give an advantage to a player over another player. So, it really depends on your perspective. An unlimited use tool vs a limited use tool does, technically, give some level of advantage over another player. Is it enough to consider this game P2W? That's up to you.

Pay for convenience is pay to win in an environment that has tools that can have you horizontally progress faster or easier.

Although, there are a lot of cool diamonds in here among some of the not so great things. Heart of thorns, path of fire, LW 3 and 4 are so fun. Best mounts in an mmo for sure. Classes feel great to do events/raids with. PvP is overcomplicated, hard to balance, and not new friendly. Very cool legendaries. UI for group finding needs improvement.

It cost me $120ish for 400hrs worth of story and 1300hrs more of fun. I paid for a bit more cuz it was worth it to me. If u get past the dry initial leveling experience (use it to learn ur class), hop in and grind those fun xpacs.

The scummiest things like infinite gathering tools per character can be got around easily by buying the max level ones with charges from vendors. Just don't buy them.

A critical streamer said "if ur a fan of MMOs, you'd be missing out by not playing this one"
I need my zen mmo gameplay and its here for sure 🎣
Thanks! Yeah, I tried playing PvP for fun to try it out but I felt like I was playing against people who have hundreds of hours.

It’s p2w light.

The biggest problem is that the gold to gem conversion is a farce. There is no instance in which you would prefer spending time to farm gold instead of just using that time to make money which you then use to buy gems (gold).

Even if you’re minimum wage, that’s currently $7.25 (this is federal level, many states have higher minimum wages), $7.50 gets you 600 gems, which roughly exchange to 150 gold. You can’t farm 150 gold an hour. If we look at the EU this becomes even more ridiculous because of much higher minimum wages where you roughly get 280 gold/hr. This is considering minimum wage. A person with a more decent job will buy around 400 gold for an hour of work.

That’s the problem with the game, there is no incentive to farm gold (and it’s a f…ing pain) unless you’re some socially awkward NEET.

Basically there is no point in getting anything yourself that is not account-bound and even then there’s workarounds because the first stages of crafts that lead to account-bound things can often be bought & you will need a couple mandatory things from the store that’ll make the game less annoying to play like infinite gathering tools and salvage gobblers.

There are also many scummy traps and pitfalls, ‘reverse psychology baits’ in the game, like bombarding new players with flavor and un-sellable, but ultimately useless things like very short-term buff items, to make them think: “man, this game is so great, free stuff all the time I better get some more bag tabs from the store”.

I mean, thats kinda how supply vs demand works, thats why the exchange-rate always changes. Also, while correct in theory, your example has 3 flaws:

- It only takes into account "maximizing gold gain per unit of time" with the goal of getting the most ammount of gold in the shortest time possible. But thats not how its supposed to work, you arent supposed to just get everything out of the store with just minimal effort, the devs obviously need to make money. But with enough play here and there, even without focussing on "max gold gain", you will get enough gold over time to regulary buy stuff out of the store.

- Just because people earn enough money in theory it doesnt equate to them being able to spend it. Especially when it comes to minimum wage, most people who only earn that much cant afford to just carelessly spend it for a game.

- The same applies to pretty much every game out there that features "being able to trade game currency for paid currency", it will ALWAYS be faster to just swipe your card compared to farm the currency.

That’s the problem with the game, there is no incentive to farm gold (and it’s a f…ing pain) unless you’re some socially awkward NEET.
I have to strongly disagree: There is incentive, you can still regulary get enough gold to trade for gems without focussing on only farming. Just because it isnt the most efficient "gems per hour" method it doesnt mean that there is no reason / incentive to farm it at all. And i have to be honest, that last part is kinda rude.

you will need a couple mandatory things from the store that’ll make the game less annoying to play like infinite gathering tools and salvage gobblers.
Again, i have to disagree, neither of those are "mandatory" in any way. "Nice to have"? Sure, but not mandatory to the point that you have to go out of your way to farm for it. Infinite tools, gobblers, salvage-o-matic, those only "turn a profit" if you use them excessively over a long time, and even the "net gain" is minimal at best. Their main advantage is not having to buy a new tool / salvage kit every now and then, but thats only convinience, nothing mandatory.

to make them think: “man, this game is so great, free stuff all the time I better get some more bag tabs from the store”.
Even that bag space isnt mandatory tho. You will get average-sized bags pretty quickly, and getting the bigger ones wont drain your gold too much. The crux here is "propper inventory hygiene". It doesnt matter how much bank space someone has, if that person keeps every little thing and hoards every item, they WILL run out of space at some point. I should know, i pretty much start out every RPG like that (which is why i despise RPGs that feature an "inventory weight limit" that hinders your movement once you carry to many items).
But the moment you actually invest even just a few minutes into checking what you really need you will come to see that even a small inventory is pretty sufficient, especially if we consider the "you can send crafting mats straight to the bank without going there" button.
Is it a "beginner trap"? Maybe, maybe not, thats up for debate. But i would argue anyone who has played any kind of RPG (especially MMOs) before should know how to manage their inventory. Because as someone said in a different thread: It doesnt matter how many inventory space a hoarder has, 10 slots or 1000, they WILL reach the limit either way.

Definitely. A lot of people used to PvP in GW1 and now do the same here.. and since GW1 was released in 2005 (19 years ago), they've been playing a while lol

no. gear is relatively easy to get and doesn't get obsolete over time. there is no korean mmos gear enhancement bs as well.
its a mmorpg and if u want fast progress u can pay yea becouse of the gem to gold thing, is this bad? no its not and its far away from pay to win, becouse we are speaking about PVE there nobody cares if u farm and put your time in and not your money to become a strong player

u play the game and if u think yea u put more time in this game in, then u can buy the expansions and your account changes from free to play to a real account without negative effects, thats how the game work its big its nice if u think same then give it a try and choose by your own if its worth to buy it :terraria:
- 5000 hours player here who can say its worth the time :D

ps if u have some questions now or later u can ask me or others the whole time, thats what i do ingame the most time, helping guys

Put it this way. You will run out of inventory space in your bank and on person.

You will pay up for more inventory slots if you plan on playing.
Drake 25 febr. 2024 la 5:01
The pay for convenience in GW2 isn't pay to win. First no one is going to OS you because they have an infinite salvage kit or mining pick.

Then even if someone bought all of their gear from AH and went in WvW, there is no guarantee they can kill you, because builds play a lot more than equipment (someone with the default soldier equipment can be effective if they build accordingly). Being full legendary won't make you a good play all of the sudden (and being full legendary means playing a lot since there are some legendary slots like armour, trinkets, rings and amulet that you can't buy right away, you need to play for some time to get them).

And in pvp everything is horizontal and handed to you from the beginning, so you can't get anything that would give you any advantage (unless you count buying the service of a skilled player to play in your stead P2W, but in that case that throws any argument out of the window because paying off a dev to unlock everything in your account and giving you a legit godmode is P2W).

About inventory slot. Only material is necessary.

I never bought any inventory slot on a character and I play since the 2012, and I have 9 chars. You can craft 32 slot bags, if four 32 slot bags are not enough, it's a management issue, throw out or sell the useless stuff.

the more you play GW2 it's gonna feel like a mobile game. You gonna be locked behind xpac's and masteries to roam properly. You gonna deal with a ton of jumping and gliding puzzles.

I have never youtubed puzzles as much as I have in this game and remember why I quit 5 years ago, lol

GW2 is the opposite of mobile mmos:
- expansions vs super p2w cash shop
- horizontal progress vs infinite gear grind
- way less fomo
- no battlepass
- more polished and premium than all mobile mmos and most pc mmos.

There's literally no way whatsoever for anyone in Soldier's gear to be effective in WvW. Back in 2014, sure. But not in the 10 years since.
You'll just take 2-3 more seconds to die.

That’s the problem with the game, there is no incentive to farm gold (and it’s a f…ing pain) unless you’re some socially awkward NEET.

I do exactly that, farm gold so i can buy cool stuff from the gem store for absolutely free every week. ^^

But.. i guess i fall into the other comment also, since i AM socially awkward, i wear cat ears while playing MMO games (i blame Final Fantasy 14, i did it once for memes, but then.. it kinda became a "thing" and a cute meme at that hih) and i enjoy getting gold in many ways, from content i LIKE doing anyways, so i don't farm the most boring or painful stuff, i just follow actually good tips from a friend who knows his stuff about the games economy, so he just tips me with the next "trendy" stuff that i should stock up on and sell when it becomes big profit value.

And actually just playing the contents i like profits me nicely. I do play decent amount some days tho, with 2 accounts. I have Anet account AND my Steam account. So yes, i hang with people who know what they are doing what comes to gold, so i sort of get good tips all the time.

They even put stuff like detailed graphs of prices and stuff in our discord (and sometimes in my dms), i don't understand much of those, so i just have to always ask to confirm so i don't mess up, sometimes i'm a bit silly with things, so better confirm.. :D

So once sort of gets decent amount, then can just grow it steadily and i try not to spend ALL in some gem store stuff at once so can then keep investing to good stuff. Sometimes i do spend way too much of gold to gems all at once.. shopping cool stuff is my addiction. But hey, what are friends for - then i ask for a lend and "surely will pay back before you even know it!" and give a sad kitten (with cat ears) look stream or selfie in discord and they give me a few coin so i get out of my bankrupt peasant state and back to the nobility lifestyle.

But even before them helping me out, i swear this game has most fun gold earning methods and actual gameplay loop out of any MMO i have played and the gold to gem conversion is REALLY fair, when thinks how it would be in other games, and how it is.. There usually is not even that fair mechanic at all, but only like real money into currencies into gifting method to friends, where scams and gold selling happens by 3rd parties.

So all in all, i absolutely LOVE the GW2 gold to gems system and economy. I am addicted to both the game and how fun it is to get free cool stuff every week. :UDG_Heart:

Every new thing that comes to gem store i always buy for free. ^^ Sometimes i almost feel bad for it, it feels almost like cheating compared to other mmo games. So to counter that, i occasionally gift a DLC to a new friend/guildie who does not have it with real money, so i support Anet that way. I have gifted Complete Edition + SotO to my bestie, and several HoT+PoF & SotO's as pure gifts to friends & guildmates. I'm not rich irl, but i just don't spend on alcohol or partying as a socially awkward person, so i can spend on games every now and then. ^^
