I thought GW2 was a dead game?
Why release it on steam after so long?

I'd say the game is far from dead. Still has a active community. Story content still coming out. New expansion in the works as well.

Yeah, far from dead. I haven't played in a couple of years since i was there at release. It's so great exploring Tyria again.

one easy reason: more visibility = more money

a nice side effect is the easier purchase of the expansions.

GW2 is FAR from dead! There hasn't been this many players in the game in YEARS.
An expansion has been confirmed.
Definitively not dead!

Far from dead, tons of player, still getting updates, and the 3rd expansion is in the works.

I've played GW2 off and on very lightly for a couple of years, but just jumped in fully recently (even buying the ultimate edition of Path of Fire). There are always people around, cities are full (which can be an fps killer). Tagged along with a group of at least 80 people for a world boss.

It uses megaservers, they'll always be "full"

Already one can see the GW2 fanboys are out en-mass saying everything is fine and that the game is even more populated than FFXIV. You really gotta be on some narcotic if you believe that.

A new patch just dropped, 100+ players on an event that is 8 years old.
I wouldn't call this game dead at all.

This. The game may not be dead but the quality is not there anymore. It is losing players as it's not as populated as it used to be and I guess Anet doesn't really have a choice but to give Steam cash in order to keep this sinking ship afloat. From server issues, to lackluster releases, to a balance that's all over the place every patch... it's not in a really good state. Unless you wanna buy skins, they design tons of those.
