Question about Redeeming Codes

are all codes only redeemable through the website?

i ask cause i found a site that lists codes that can be redeemed but they are very short codes compared to the ones i normally redeem. they say they have to be redeemed in game, however when i go in game and click on the redeem code button on the Black Lion Trading Company screen it says to go to the website so im confused

AFAIK some codes can not redeemed if you are using a steam account to log in.

Adding to the above, there are plenty of sites with "bogus" codes, that just advertise them for "clicks".

On a Steam account, all codes have to be redeemed on the website.
Go to https://account.arena.net/login and click on "Sign in through Steam". Once you are in, you'll see the "Redeem a Code" button. If the codes are valid, you will be able to redeem them.

i knew about this and its how i have redeemed some codes already, what i didnt notice before was the 'redeem special codes' link in it. it took me to this page and it clearly says that gems and special items are redeemed in game https://help.guildwars2.com/hc/en-us/articles/230558147

so i guess steam users just arent allowed to redeem these special codes like someone said above

From the pinned FAQ:

Can I purchase items from the Gem Store through the Steam Client using payment methods other than the Steam Wallet?
In-game purchases can only be made with the Steam Wallet within the Steam client. Gem and game codes obtained outside of Steam cannot be redeemed by Steam users. Item codes can be redeemed by Steam users at {LINK REMOVED}.

(For some reason, all the links from the pinned posts have been removed, I'm guessing unintentionally. This particular one used to point at the same page I linked you before.)
As to why Steam users can't redeem gem codes, my guess is it's related to the deal between ANet (NCSoft) and Steam.
