Alternatively, if you go straight out of the pod a ways, you'll come to a pair of hangars with a round platform between them. This is what I like to call the "center" of the map (it isn't quite the center but it might as well be).

Stand there, and look for a stone archway that leads into a bowl-shaped area that has sand.

There will be aluminum and bauxite here, not a huge amount, but enough to get you started. Putting a T1 Ore Miner here will allow you to (slowly) get more bauxite.

I never found that, was too scared was going to clip through the terrain there and lose my inventory.

Ore Extractors are unlocked a little later, but not THAT much later. They're on the Pressure tree, so don't neglect your drills.

Bauxite is only used for the T2 and T3 Ore Crushers (which are not the same as Extractors).

Admittedly, it's one of the few sources of aluminum very early on. Make sure you don't crush all of your bauxite until you've got at least two T3 Ore Crushers made.

You'll probably want to put one in the Bauxite area, and the other in the Uraninite area when you find it.

Thank you for saving me, I have very little Bauxite left and am about to unlock those.

If you do run out of Bauxite... you can go back to your pod, step outside and turn 90 degrees to the right. If you look up you should see a red lava flow and a path into the mountains leading towards it. If you go up there, you can find a moderate amount of it there, though I wouldn't get too close to the lava, it will hurt you (you'll lose food meter). Need a jetpack to get around up there safely, but there is some safe bauxite up there.

Or, if that's not an option, you oftentimes find aluminum in the plethora of blue chests scattered about everywhere.

Just be careful what you spend aluminum on until you get the T1 extractor unlocked.

Also, remember that normal meteor showers oftentimes contain aluminum along with normal metals as well. I always go out looking for aluminum after a meteor shower early-game, usually find 4-6 pieces of it easy.
