Dying has pretty much zero consequence.
The only thing I can think of for my stage are extractors.
When I go afk I go into the ESC-Menu, which pauses the game and do not drain hunger and thirst.
And my extractors are always full when I get to them.
Is there something that is neccesary to idle afk?
I guess to let the clock tick and your terraform score tick up while AFK.
I keep myself busy playing but in the last stage it ticks VERY slowly.
Last stage of every patch usually have much higher goal than it makes any sense simply because there's no content after it. So, no reason to reach that goal. If you got to 1% chances are you'll be at 100% the very next patch and immediately unlock next stage.
If you are not at the last stage then you either haven't built enough machinery, haven't found good species of trees/insects/fish to use or haven't launched specific amplifying rocket which speed up progress in specific areas. The latter actually falls into "haven't built enough machinery" category, but some people really miss those and have no idea why it all takes so awfully long or why they have to build hundreds of machines to reach the next stage. So, it worth to point out separately.
The only times I had a reason to AFK were:
* During the recent event when I had to wait for cocoa and wheat to grow. That was boring until I found a way to speed that up by an order of magnitude.
* At the last stage when I waited for Terra Tokens to pile up to unlock everything. Even then I decided to spend time on building more machinery for better and faster production instead of just waiting. So, now I have multiple rockets sending almost everything there is to send to the orbit and they do so without any delays beside tome to transport everything from multiple auto-crafters to a demanding rocket.
Just load their inventory full of food and water (in 1:2 proportion) and leave them in a building. You should have enough time to take a nap. :)
There are mods extending size of the inventory or let resources stack. Together with this mod you can make survival redundant if it annoys you. In the late game it mostly is anyway.
