They're kind of like those useless buildings you have to build in Age of Empires, that you never use, but you have to build them in order to advance to the next stage.
Doesn't change the fact that the buildings need to be fixed, regardless of how often people use them. :) It's pointless to draw something that looks one way but actually build it in game to work differently. I bet if it was a invisible wall like this in front of some of the main pathways in and out of the areas it would have been fixed awhile ago. ;)
