I have had more success treating it like a Backpack / Movable crate. Moving around with a jet-pack is faster, especially while using Cookies. However, mid game, before access to teleportation the Rover can be extremely handy as extra storage when running between Mines because you can use the "Vehicle Summon" button.

Here's an example: During my mid game, my T2 Ore Extractor at the Obsidian location, is far away. So, I crafted a vehicle station, nearby that Ore Extractor. I would take what I want out of the extractor, extras were thrown into nearby Locker Storage, and I can then teleport that vehicle back to the station at my base.

I didn't find it particularly useful on humble, it's just too small and too many obstacles and too much verticality

your aware you can go to the rover parking place and summon them back or if inside when they get stuck spam f4 it will unstick them

They're great for the storage. As @Elf On A Hook mentioned, you can teleport the rover back home in the vehicle garage you build, or can use F4 (unstuck) to try to fix the issue. Or if you have nothing inside the vehicle, you can literally pick it up and put it into your pocket.

You can also get an upgrade to have it provide unlimited O2, but often you only get access to this upgrade shortly before your terraforming creates a breathable atmosphere, so that aspect is relatively limited.

I never used the rover at all on my Prime game. It came too late for me to need it. On Humble it's been great. I throw it in my backpack when I go exploring. When my backpack starts getting full, I put it down, unload, and continue exploring. The beacon is invaluable for finding it again to unload until it's full. Then I leave it while I go off and fill my pack again. I jet home, summon the vehicle, unload all the goodies. I really like it. Though I almost never actually drive it.

My one issue is that after a while, every time I bring it back to the station it shows up on it's side. Lol. No idea why. I have to get inside it (drive) and it thumps back down on all four tires again. It's a strange quirk.

Same here. Just use it for extra storage when away from home base and then recall it. It always arrives on it's side like a drunken sailer was driving it off cliffs. :)

You don't have to use them. However, you can and they are extremely helpful if you know what you're doing. You want to get one as soon as possible. Never increase the speed past the first upgrade because people have trouble controlling them then. You can go from wreck to wreck or go around collecting chests and items much faster. You can use it as a shelter when you get the O2 upgrade. With the logistics then the drones will take from the storage so it's always clearing for you. You can put it in your pocket and keep it with you and take it out when you need it. So, the best benefit is taking it through the gates to the procedural wrecks. You park it outside the wreck and when your inventory is full you just to go the entrance, empty to its storage and keep going through the wreck. Then when you and it and full you can return base. With the beacon you can easily find it again in the harder to locate mini areas. And lastly, if you die while out with it, you can recall it back to it's location.

It's really up to how you want to play. I still have games I don't use it at all until the warp gates and then only when on those procedural wreck clean outs. But I also have games where I rely on it heavily and use it for gathering way more resources than I could have held on my own making it faster overall. And since I typically wait until later to clear wrecks, the storage is great because I keep dumping stuff in it and drones take it away and I don't have to constantly carry stuff back and forth. I can keep going without returning to base.
