2) They take a little while to spawn - as in seconds or a minute
3) The beach is great because there's no vegetation on it so you can see them
4) Bauxite area is also good
5) I've observed that saving and logging back in can trigger them spawning if they aren't but this could just be my imagination
There are other locations where they spawn but those are very convenient if you don't have teleporters.
I just tried something today that seemed to help. When you go larva hunting, take a couple you already have from storage and drop them near water in the caverns or on the beach. They started spawning all over after that. Could be a timing fluke as I only did it once.
Also, if you're just looking for the basic larvae, the initial ice cave that has long rock pathways leading up spawn quite a few at the top of these paths. I built my base in the cave, so it's convenient for me to zip up to the area with the pieces of drone. It's wide and many larvae spawn there if you walk around a bit.
