Recycler. What's the point?
I made on but can't think of anything it's useful for.

It is for when you get drones and your storage is full. Thst way you can get rid of items you don't want.

Keeping iridium, uranium, osmium, or super-alloy as rods for space efficiency can be broken back down into components as/if needed. 's what I've been doing.

the machine you're describing is the shredder.

The recycler is for breaking down a complex item back into it's constituent parts. ie putting in an iridium/osmium/uranium rod spits out all the raw ores that made it.
My favorite use is to recycle bee larva; gives back fertilizer, mutagen1 and the uncraftable uncommon larva...needed for making silkworms.

Recycling any larva/eggs will give you back what you put into it so you can keep trying to get the one you want.

Ah, my bad, I got them mixed up. You are correct.

I think if you recycle plants you get back a fertiliser

A recycle machine in my science center is a must have. Trying to get the various rare fish, frog, and butterfly eggs/larvae means many attempts using recipes that often create types you don't need. Into the recycler they go for another attempt. Many, many times.

the 2 use cases i know for recycler:

-turn water into ice lategame.

-turn bee larvae into uncommon larva that you can't craft otherwise (but since you can't automate it one wonders if it's really faster than just going out to get some.)

It is WAY faster to recycle once you have T2 beehives. Maybe you're a lot luckier than I am, but uncommon larvae are so incredibly rare for me until after they're irrelevant and then suddenly they're everywhere. I'll struggle to find like 20 prior to T2 beehives and then I'll unlock them and walk outside and oh look here's a half dozen right outside the door!

i feel like i know this 1 spot near the central plateau where a new larva respawns as soon as you loot one where you can just get larva pretty fast.

Recycling flares (abundant in procedural wrecks) gives an explosive powder and a bioplastic that would otherwise cost two sulfur, iridium, two mushrooms, silicon and water.

Circuit boards cost iron, silicon, Aluminum, nitrogen, zeolite and bioplastic. Or you can get two of them by recycling an access card.

You can just use the flares and deconstruct them instead of using the recycler for that.

omg, never thought to try recycling an access card. got so many extra stashed from all the portal runs.
