As for OP, there's no advantage to multiple locations. Those locations more or less just exist to be closer to various bases. Pretty much just use the closest one. It'd be more impactful if you could limit where drones went and could setup multiple production facilities with their own mines but since you can't really do that...no point.
respectfully disagree with the term 'inefficient'. But sure, densely packed may be called dirty. But most certainly 8 in a circle was not anywhere all that was needed.
What I ended up doing with the multiple osmium patches; the one just beside the iridium cave near start was designated as the raw ore production (as it's close to the fusion cell factory). The two outlier patches focus on producing rods on site to maximize drone flight times. Similar for the iridium patches.
not like you ever go there to manually collect at that point. just stack em as tight as you can since drones don't care for a walkable path.
the real question is does placing a drone station (drone storage) near them noticeably increase spike demand efficiency or not.
if you put it near the pickup location, they don't have to travel to the pickup location when demand kicks in.
bit of a moot point ofc since if you set up some automated crafting there is steady demand, but still.
yes? idle drones go sit in a drone station. that's the whole reason to place the drone station near the pick up point?
yes. if you put the drone station next to the extractor (or w/e you need them to do), it doesn't have to travel to the extractor.
as opposed to having the station at your main base, when it then have to first travel to the extractor before work can begin.
theres only room for 25 drones per station, so you can control where the drones go.
but again, pretty niche situation since in most automation setups you are bottlenecked by the extractor production speed anyways.
