Game freezes/crashes when husband tries to join.

When I first launch the game, and the husband tries to join, the game will permanently freeze/crash. I have to ALT+F4 to close the game.

Guaranteed crash the first time he tries.

I will relaunch the game, and he can join just fine.

Crash process:
He tries to join.
My game will freeze.
Game will unfreeze.
Husband will tell me he is kicked to the menu
My game freezes a second time, this time permanently.
The "Hit F8 for Feedback" will pop up and then leave a strange bar like imprint on the game as it slides away, because the game is frozen.
"This program has stopped responding" does not pop up.
I have to ALT+F4 to close the game.

Relaunch the game, husband tries to join. Works flawlessly.

We've been playing the heck out of this game and it is always the same process, nothing we have tried stops my first launch from crashing.
We've even tried joining via steam vs joining via code.

If anyone has any idea on why this happens, or how we could fix it, please let us know.

I think I have found 2 work-arounds? Feel free to try them

First Work-Around:
After the game does it's first freeze, hit ESC. Wait to see if your friend joins.
Don't let that second freeze come.
When your friend says he got kicked to menu, you will find your esc menu still works so you can hit Quit to Menu and try a second time.

This has worked every time for us.


Second Work-Around:
This one I just discovered yesterday and is still in testing, but so far it's worked twice.

Before you invite your friend, save your game.
Then invite your friend.
He should join just fine. No crashes.

If you do crash, try again, but this time when your friend joins hit ESC when you get that first freeze.
You should see that your friend has joined pop up on the menu screen.
Leave the Esc menu and enjoy.

If you played in the private or development branch multiplayer before the 1.0, make sure you both are on the main branch (betas -> none). Also verify game files via Steam.

If you have 3rd party antivirus or firewall, add the game to their exception list.

Can only people join who you are friends with on Steam? Or can you host an open free-to-enter game?

My husband is not going to join me, so I'd like to play with likeminded gamers I haven't met yet.

Only requirement is for everyone to own the game on Steam. If you find someone, you can send them an invite code, found in the ingame pause menu, and with that code, they can join you.

I have also had this experience in coop, buddy tries to join my game or I try to join theirs and it hard locks the hosts game. Every time. I have looked around for an answer but no dice.

We just bought the game 2 days ago. We don't know how to access a private or development branch.

We checked the firewall / antivirus, it's not that.

Good to know it's not just us! I hope we can find a solution.

Thankfully it works fine the second launch, and we have zero issues.
Accidentally just played 4 hours straight.

Same issue with me and my friend, we bought the game 2 days ago, after I host and he joins the game crashes and we have to reboot, 2nd attempt works fine though

We reported it through the F8 feedback option. You're the 3rd person I've had tell me that they have this same issue. Maybe if enough people F8, they'll fix it?

Neither me or my husband have a MijuGames in our AppData/Local/Temp.
I have marked this as an answer and asked others do this since multiple people have commented with the same issue, but neither me or my husband have this file that you have asked us to find.

I also do not have that folder in that location, or anywhere else. With the way the game crashes on coop join it just locks up and we have to alt+f4, I am not even sure it is working through the crash handler.

For us - it is not a first time crash and second time it works though as the OP said, it locks up every single time. @akarnokd, is it possible the crash log is somewhere else?

Thank you for confirming this. I will remove it as topic answer. Neither me or my husband could find this folder.

If the engine encounters the crash, the files will be in that directory. If Windows gets involved, no crash file.

Lockups or hangs may not generate any log or crash output.
