What is purpose of animal rocket?

I built an animal rocket hoping animals would be spread over the planet, but no?

I haven't encountered the animal rocket but if it's like the plant rocket it will only increase the numbers for biomass. It appears after this last update that when we reach certain levels of terraforming that various creatures will appear spontaneously on the map though. My oldest and most developed game has randomly spawned fish and butterflies so I hope that after I get animals going they'll eventually show up in other placed on the map too.
