Edit: If you're at the beginning, build the terraforming/blueprint screens to give yourself an idea of what blueprints unlock when. It is often worth deconstructing old machines to use the components for the upgraded versions.
When key machine techs unlock, it can be worth stopping what you are doing to build some of them to keep your progression going. Can't emphasise rockets enough when you get to that stage. Don't sleep on them (10x all production additive per rocket)
For instance, I hide my big machines like the drills and heaters - usually in the sulfur biome because it's covered in fog anyway.
I do the same, no more than 4 Machines, that and I've only used 3 of each rocket. Other than that I place 3-4 of each insect or O2 generation units around my main base.
