Jokes aside (although it really was like that when I started gaming 30 some odd years ago) it's not really an industry standard, quite a few games have it, particularly those that are cross platform as it was a primarily a console phenomenon first it feels, but it's not universal.
It's not really a must have feature, the game doesn't need it, it doesn't affect the game at all. And no not every game has it. It's a nice to have and lots of people are used to it and will forget to save for long periods or when exiting the game.
That said, changing the 'exit' button to 'save and exit' or better adding it as a separate button incase you messed up and want to exit without saving, is very quick and easy.
You certainly don't want the game saving during a crash.
The game autosaves every 15 minutes, since 2021 according to the changelog. Not sure why all the top google results for this question are wrong.
