I think TPC will be adding more exploration-based objectives as they build out the story, though, so it may become more similar as they go!
TPC is much more relaxed than Subnautica in general. It also has less cool stuff to see as you explore but it's still under development.
It is 100% important to explore in Planet Crafter. If you try to survive and 'win' without discovering several vital things – not just sources of materials, but information about the world around you – you will fail.
Wait...Subnautica's character was "Ryley". This game has a character that emails you named "Riley". Hmmmm...
Yes, game gives incredible first impression but is rather empty and small overall. Each mechanic is half-baked. For example, there are metroidvania elements: some caves open up after you increase terraformation level, some vines help to reach higher places later on... But this is it for metroid-ish stuff, too small, too few to include it in a first place. And every system in the game follows same problem.
Feels like game should be sold to some big company and enter another development phase for 1-2 years in order to trully turn into something and have a direction. Cus clearly, single developer cannot handle the size and scope of this project. Currently it is trying really hard to be sandbox, adventure, metroid, platformer, base-building, automation, terraformation AT THE SAME TIME, while all parts are equally represent roughly 14% of gameplay.
I would rather play 7 games that consist from 100% pure genre or 2-3 mixes:
1) for terraforming you should pick Fate Tectonics / Terraformers / Farlanders / Terra Nil.
2) for base-building Forager, Galactic Mining Corp, Mindustry.
3) for automation Heart of Galaxy, Infinifactory, Slipways.
4) for adventure / platform / metroid Waking Mars, Steam World Dig 2.
All of them have this cosmic vibe of exploring distant planets and actually deliver content. And Planet Clafter only teases you. I can see dev putting effort, soul and love into it, but we need content man.
