You gotta learn to build up basically and use what little open ground there is for the structures that need it, building foundations if needed.
I think another decent area to build would be around the big lake by the spy ship. You'd need some grids as a lot of the area is designated as "rock" even though it's green. But there's a lot of space, you can plant a bunch of trees, and it's pretty. Only problems with these areas is that neither is close to your initial pod landing. It was kind of a pain to move all my basic stuff to the ice cave, but worth it once done.
The premise of Humble is that when you land there it's mostly a frozen snow and ice-covered wasteland of sand, dirt, and rock; and then as the planet begins to thaw out and turn green during terraformation the snow and ice slowly go away and the ground will gradually shift and settle in various places by different amounts around the map in a way that's kinda similar to actual landscape freeze-thaw processes seen in the real world.
Now some of the changes to the map are very minor and unless you've built or placed something directly on the affected spot you probably wouldn't notice anything, but in at least a couple of places the changes are a lot more dramatic, for example:
One large circular area of Humble in particular slowly turns into a massive sand and rock-lined sinkhole over time once you start moving through the water stages of terraformation - in this area in particular floating ores are most noticeable because the changes to the terrain are so very obvious.
Later on another large area breaks apart and uplifts into several large pieces because of massive vines/tree roots pushing up through the surface from below ground - this can push some things up way up into the air but it also opens up the ground and exposes underground caves; additional large vines/tree roots also appear across the map in various other locations, most of which affect the terrain around them to some degree or other.
