You won't need to use that drop button, when you prepare to clear a passage with explosives.
Instead, when you're in your inventory and looking at the explosive in it, just aim for the middle of the explosive icon and just rightclick on it. It will drop armed all the time (at least it did for me).
"Glück auf" as the german coal miners used to say ;-)
They're not cheap to make and they seem so ineffective.
Do I have to plant them in a special position or does it normally take 2-3 explosives?
It depends on the rubble and how you position the explosive. Usually it should take 1-2 explosives. The area of effect of the explosive isn't that wide, so you have to plant it as near to as much rubble as possible to get the best effect.
Try to jump on a part of the rubble, let the explosive fall upon it and trigger it quickly before it has a chance to tumble to much (and possibly slip from the rubble again). That way the effect on the rubble is maximized.
Thanks for that.
I've also discovered something else. The more explosives required seems to mean the better the hidden goodies. I can't say it's the case for certain but it looks that way so far.
That observation's pretty much right on the money to be fair.
And don't feel like you have to clear all of the explodeable rocks in any given location, as fun as exploding stuff is, it's honestly just a waste of time and resources, instead just clear enough of each rock pile so you can climb/fly through the opening into, and out of, the previously hidden area.
The good thing is, in the case of hidden wrecks you can usually tell where each wrecks entrance actually is behind the rock pile (n.b. the rocks usually cover up more than just the entrance so it's quite easy to blow up the wrong part of a pile and have to go again) so you can be a bit more precise with placement and open access up in 1 shot; but for at least a couple of the other larger rock piles on the map you kinda just have to go with a best guess and hope you get lucky with as few explosives as possible.
Oh and there are situations where explodeable rock piles may be used to block secret shortcuts between adjacent hidden interesting areas, so it's always worth keeping at least one extra explosive to hand.
