Considering buying....DLC?
Judging by the overwhelming positive reviews the game appears very appealing to a long time Subnautica fan.

But as the above title suggests I'm wondering about the DLC. Is it worth getting it all or are their some that are needed but others not?

The Planet Crafter is awesome as a starter. Play that and then consider the DLC.
There is a Demo you can try, if you love it get the lot huge game with DLC.
I've played 609 and really enjoyed it.
Lots of discovery and nice surprises as you teraform a planet. :)

The DLC is a narrative adventure apart. Another planet to terraform: Humble. This content can only be accessed by replaying another game, it cannot be accessed from your base game. Advice starts with the demo of the base game as Jaunitta says. It allows you to test the first stage of terraforming the base planet Prime. If you like it, buy the base game (you can continue your demo game). And if you finish the base game and want more, you can reterraform from 0 another planet thanks to the DLC. Basically, the best would be to make up your own mind on the game. Afterwards, if you're hesitating for the DLC, you can always come back and ask your questions about it later if you finish the base game
Note: personally I loved the base game and the DLC I recommend them.

The DLC is not "necessary", it has nothing to do with the main game. But the DLC is worth it, imo. It depends on whether you can afford to get Humble at the same time as main game. If you can, you should. If that would make it uncomfortable for you, wait a bit and buy the DLC later. It won't make the main game worse.

You won't find any combat in this game, the danger is solely in managing your health, water & oxygen. At the beginning, you move pretty slow and limited, but you can build lots of tools to increase your speed, inventory and reach. You get to be responsible for the gradual revivication of an entire planet, and you get to discover several small and one large mystery. I have never played Subnautica because I already have a healthy fear of the ocean, but I think you would really enjoy this game. It has a relaxing vibe, even during the most dangerous beginning stage.

Humble is a beautiful new ice planet. It's slightly smaller than the main game planet, Prime. It takes longer to terraform. The new technology added by the DLC is unnecessary on Prime, and only used on Humble. It's fun to explore, with a much bigger underground, and new rules. I personally love it. It's still very new, but the devs are very responsive with this game, and they just added a huge free update for both the DLC and main game.

Would have to agree with the posters here, the DLC is awesome.

The base game itself is surprisingly addictive, it has a very unique style of progression in that in order to progress, you increase this number called the Terraformation Index (Ti).

This number is increased passively by any machines you've built that do things like generate o2, pressure, heat, etc so long as you have enough energy output to power them (if not, they temporarily pause and go offline until you build more power generators or deconstruct the thing you just built that went over the limit). This is unique because this number grows even while you're doing stuff like gathering resources or setting up infrastructure, this number is always growing in the background and your goal is to get it to a certain point and the more stuff you build, the faster you will get there.

The world changes around you as that number increases, as the promotional materials show... the sky goes blue, rain starts to fall, standing water starts to form into rivers and lakes, grass starts to grow, then small plants and soon you're seeing natural trees pop up, and sometimes these changes can open new areas that were previously inaccessible and it all happens organically without any loading or cutscenes.

The game's mechanics are very similar to Subnautica except there's no hostile fauna and I think the other posters above missed that you can get hurt through falling, lava, or getting hit with meteors or meteor debris (just stay indoors if you're concerned).

The game has a very customizable difficulty, anything from how fast your vitals deplete to how fast the Ti grows to how much energy machines use in percentages can be customized, there's different starting locations on the default planet, and of course there's a creative mode like many games of this kind have.

I agree with the others. Prime alone is brilliant and once you have played that, Humble simply adds to the pleasure of being able to add more play time to the game having not juts a new Biome to explore but an entire new planet.
The Devs originally said there would be no other planets to explore, but listened to player demand and introduced Planet Humble as a separate DLC, so not to break from the original Prime lure that you are a prisoner sent there to terraform that planet, so you cant leave it.
The introduction of the Portal also gives more play time because it allows you to go visit far off places, search for wrecks and return with treasures.
I have played since day 1. Devs do listen to player demand and I highly recommend both Prime and Humble

I've always had the name. It goes back a long time. Didn't know there was another with the same name.

I'd like to say that since the Humble DLC was released, they've also done a lot of work on both the Prime and Humble planets, updated to Unity 6 from 5, fixed bugs, done quality of life work, added more biomes to Humble and more.

Basically they're continuing to improve the game, whether you have the DLC or not. They've knocked off a number of issues that players have wanted for a long time such as adding an internal staircase.

The game is still improving as a result. If you are price conscious I would say play Prime first and get the DLC as and when you've become a bit bored of that. It has slightly different methods of generating resources, a different map and some features that Prime doesn't have.

I've enjoyed both.
