Build a small one attached to the side of it.
Build another small one above that.
Then build your second large living compartment on top of the first one, attached to the small ones at the side.
You can then remove the ones on the side.
To be able to remove a door you can replace it with a window, or you can build a single unit as like an 'airlock' type structure that contains the door. So if you want to remove the door you can just remove that structure, then add it back wherever you want to place your door.
This stops you from needing to destruct your large living structures or place windows where you had doors etc...
Once you start placing large living structures side-by-side, you start to hit other limits and the positioning of them will be even more difficult to achieve. For instance, I tried from the inside and outside adding the 4th large living compartment in a row, and it instead added on top of the first one in the row, literally 100 yards BEHIND me. It takes a while to get them placed properly and is probably some kind of glitch in the math used to figure out the placement of the larger structures.
Building small structures to attach them to in this scenario does help too.
Something similar helps in placing Biodome T2's on top of your base. Put a small room on top first, then attach the Biodome to it, and a ladder inside the small room. Or remove the small room and add a ladder outside the base to the roof.
To remove a door or window, make a 1x1 apartment and join it to the existing one where the door or window is. Then remove the new one. Unfortunately, you do not get the materials back.
I have that happen occasionally. If you look for the link symbol before placing, it shouldn't glitch.
