My first drive
I built a rover and took it out for a ride. The controls were difficult, but I managed. The landscape occasionally disappears under the vehicle, usually on a down slope. In one swift update, the game managed to switch the controls from the mouse and keyboard to the keyboard, with the mouse now only used to control the camera. When you exit the rover, you are on top of the vehicle looking in some apparently random direction.

I like that there are more things to build -- a series of upgrades for the car. I've upgraded the inventory so far. But where's the color option? I don't want a white rover. I can adjust the color of beacons, why not vehicles? (Or buildings, for that matter).

The whole rover experience is a bit wonky, though. It gets stuck far too often. The 3rd person POV is a bit disconcerting, after running around in 1st person POV for all other parts of the game. There's no obvious way to pick stuff up from inside and put it in the storage. Jump out, pick up an object, then interact with the 'trunk' to transfer the object from my personal inventory to the 'trunk'. The worst aspect is that I have to exit the vehicle in order to eat or drink. If a driver has to exit in order to eat, the fast food industry simply can't exist on this world!

I got stuck on my very first drive, and had to summon it back to base. I'm wondering if this isn't the new norm. (Summoning seems a bit non-realistic, too -- it's going to break immersion every time).

Lot of the non-rover parts of this upgrade were much better.

That's the camera clipping THROUGH the terrain, and it's unavoidable given the camera angles they use.

They do this so that you can look around while simultaneously driving.

The camera position when exiting is an oversight I'd wager.

Give them time, if enough players ask for it, it could happen. But then, you can't color your base rooms either, so...

You can use the middle mouse button to switch to first person perspective while in the rover. I wouldn't recommend it as it's hard to understand where the rover is in relation to nearby obstacles.

You mean, like you have to in real life when you put something in the trunk of your car?

Seems reasonable. You put something in that big box in the back of the car, you have to get out to access it again.

A minor nitpick, but an understandable game limitation.

I guess they don't want you to ruin the upholstery. you know, empty food packs and empty bottles in the back seat.

I think everybody has at least one of those. My uncle is stone deaf if somebody wants him to do something - but go up three floors and crack a bottle of beer and he will 'happen' to wander in within a minute or two, lol! (Sheesh...)

Yup. "Bob's yer Uncle" has a whole new level of meanings in our family, lol!

"Bob" (aka Stretch) was actually my Dad, but he had a lot in common with his brother, which led to some rather legendary tales when they got together and managed to sneak off.

It's lucky my Gran had a sturdy heart; at one point she got a call from the Merchant Marines saying that her 16-year-old son had told them he was 18 and joined up - when his appendix failed and he landed in the hospital in Cairo (yes, Egypt), they realized his real age and wanted to know, did they have her permission to operate? I can't imagine, lol! =8-P
