When do wild animals start spawning in?

Me and my friend have been making animals, I read that they will get wild spawns around the map but not when that will actually happen? Does anyone actually know when this will happen or will it just happen randomly? We are still playing base game, we having reached the DLC yet.

Once I reached the last level. Animals was previous.
I crafted some from genes I found and by touching the animals they would give me genes.
Then they started appearing around the map/s in Planet Crafter.
During the animals stage send animal rockets up.

Then I started seeing them in wild

Also go to the desert areas. And beaches.
Go to the large waterfall area has a plane wreak and head north I think. Head upwards till you get the coast and islands.
Large animals up there.

This makes sense, lol I am really impatient so I wasn't sure if it was something that would happen naturally or we needed to do something to trigger it.
