Osmium caves are blocked by ice. You have to wait for the ice to melt.

well i didnt know they had osmium so i came and asked where to find and it seems those caves had osmium

Was once the case that the order of melt ran from the cave above central plain by freighter wreck progressively to the east - ending with the lake bed beyond the Ring (which includes pulsar as a bonus) - it's a short period between ice plugged and water filled. Ever since the Finger Lakes were replaced by The Wilds (between what was the ancient palace and the Grand Rift), the appearance of quartz all over disrupts the order.

The lunar landscape area has some osmium. Also the cave next to here also has some sulfur and osmium you can get to without waiting for ice to melt. Not much, but I think 4 or 5 of each. And it is a long trip from the standard start area.

My first time through, I figured it was just a rare thing you found on the ground in certain places. Very limited quantities and lots of stuff that could use it, so I felt it required careful decisions on where to use it. After launching the point of interest rocket for the map, I was pretty stoked to see there were sources of it to mine and threw some T2 extractors on it, but it was still a hurdle to get enough of it for all the uses presented.
