Our current guess is that there are, perhaps 40 or 50 or 100 possible locations for warden's keys and that the game makes perhaps 15 of them available for each playthrough. So you might go to a location where someone else found a key and find nothing there.
Another current guess is that every one of the possible locations is on exposed land, easily visible to anyone nearby. Nobody has yet reported finding any inside caves, or hidden under thick foliage.
My planet is pretty well forested, although not at jungle "can't get through it" levels. It's still easy to traverse. I found one pedestal half buried in a tree trunk. Another was partially melded into a butterfly farm in the middle of a flower patch, so hard to see from any distance.
If you have a decent number of trees and flowers on your planet, these can be somewhat difficult to locate, at least until you get fairly close. There were several I couldn't see from altitude, only if I was walking on the ground. So I think it depends on how you develop your world as to how hard they may be to spot. Once you're close enough, they are hard to miss.
