Structure placement question
So how can I adjust the elevation manually... it won't snap correctly unless I place it bugged. It's forcing my to bug the thing which is just odd..

It is gonna place on the highest ground point. Looks like there is a little bit of a hill there, higher than the rest of the land. Therefore it is snapping to that spot.
if that was the case then why does it snap correctly when I turn it the opposite direction but occupying the exact same spaces? I wish that was the answer but that math ain't mathin.

Because turning it the stairs arent facing the same way, so it could be there is a spot where the stairs would be going in the first one.

Forgive me but I have no clue what you are trying to say.

On the first picture if you look closely the starcase on the right touches the ground. If that bit is higher than the rest of the ground in may cause the whole structure to snap to that hight. (which would be odd as stairs usually clip thnrough the ground)

On your second picture you rotated the whole thing 180 degree and probably avoided the slight elevation, therfire the whole tile just fits.

I find the whole foundation grid bugy and whotever you put on it doesn't snap properly to it.
I have stuff either sinking into foundation by a couple of inches or floating above it.

If I have some buildings already I can't snap foundations underneath, it just goes all over the place or snaps to the ground which in most cases will not allign to the building later.

I have a floating base for this reason
Okay so here is a few more pics for reference...

As you can see the ladders for both have 7 steps showing indicating a similar depth. I also filled in the spot for the 3rd trade rocket with foundations with no snapping issues whatsoever so it's not that they are running into anything.

I did however notice that when placed the wrong direction it snaps correctly.

...but when you place it the correct direction...

There appears to be a slight clipping glitch. My best guess is this is what is causing the issue. Since other foundations snap perfectly fine in those same spaces.

Thoughts?

I have had similar things happen with mining platforms when placing them side by side on sloped ground.

When placing the 2nd mining platform to snap to the first, it will not work if 2nd platform ends up being too high or too low above the ground. The difference is very obvious on sloped ground.

In your picture the 2 different orientations have a footprint are on different pieces of ground when you include the stairs. There must be a slight difference in the height of the ground, possibly too small a difference to see on screen.

It is odd that you can clip the stairs inside the foundation grid. With the stairs clipped inside the foundation grid, the way it snaps in place may be bugged.

Guess so, I just had to say screw it to my 3rd trade rocket and just restructure the whole setup. Unitl minor bugs like this get quashed or QOL improved if anyone want's to call it a QOL matter then it just is what it is.

If you want foundations to behave "correctly", you have to place them first. At least one.
That is, you have to start from one piece of foundation grid and add from there. You have to set your preferred height and "origin" point with this piece.

Foundation grids, when placed alone and first, follow a rather fixed grid on all 3 axes.
Miners and rocket platforms, however, don't. They allow some more freedom. If you place those first, everything else you snap to them will be slightly offset from the default "grid".
And if you can't snap some foundation you won't be able to manually align it, due to the entire structure being off grid. It will look odd, it will clip or it will be impossible to place. It quickly becomes more than annoying.

So... it's best to start from a lone piece of foundation, and build from there. Everything you manage to snap to it will fit in the foundation "fixed" grid, and what doesn't snap... Who cares, it will still fit in the grid, and it will look like it properly snapped.

That's the only workaround I found.

The grid was placed with foundations first. Everything is built off the original and all of it is directly connected. It would just appear that the additional freedom of movement you spoke of is overriding the "snap to grid" programming and as such causing it to be offset slightly.

EDIT: I think at this stage we just have to call this what it is... a bug.
