For example, the first three; bee larva, rare larva and silkworm each determine the species. If you use one of them it will give a trait that only fits in the first slot of the animal DNA machine. You can make all three at once but you can only use one of them to make an animal.
Likewise, other sources provide different traits. They are in the same order as they appear in the Animal DNA machine.
Why do you ask this? It's you decision if you want to see animals or not. They are not blocking you from ending the game, so if your goal is to just see "the end" feel free to go collect the keys and finish. If your goal is to see everything the game offers, then check the animals too. It's your choice, no one can tell you what you want.
The extractables are listed in the bottom rows, every extractable item has a certain DNA you will get from it.
DNA comes in several kinds, important are: Species, Color A, Color B as those are the necessary parts of creating a mammal. The others are optional.
Given that all mammals are equal in output, it makes sense to use the easiest available stuff for every part. This means bee larvae for species (you get so many if you have a bunch of T2 bee hives), fish eggs for B (water life collector), butterfly larvae for A (these you need to incubate with common larvael, mutagen and fertilizer - making them the only part that's limited).
If you just want to build rockets, you need any 6 traits - throw in some unused quartz or something.
Using the easiest stuff is just boring. LOL. They added it to the game, why would you not want to put some effort into it??
