Anyway I can get mushrooms?

I've explored all the wrecks, and yes I've grabbed all the seeds off shelves. I have two large storage containers full of seeds. From all that, I have exactly one mushroom seed and that came from a blue chest.

I'm at the Lakes stage, moving onto Moss.

The wiki says that's the only way to get them, randomly in blue chests after liquid water and shelves.

I basically can't make any progress now though, because it takes FOREVER for the single mushroom I have found to get enough plastic to build things. Is this just bad RNG, or are there a fixed amount on shelves that I somehow completely missed yet filled up two storage containers with other seeds?

Yeah, just bad luck. You can guarantee a spawn though. Chest inventory isn't fixed until you open the chest, so just save before you open it, and if no Mushroom seed, reload.

I don't have help for your problem, but your Wiki seems wrong. I got mushroom seeds out of wrecks well before the liquid water water stage.

Have you check underground bases or found golden chest? Maybe the mushroom seed is a rarer drop than the others?

I think some Blue Chests have some fixed loot in them, allowing you to get items earlier than they should be available in Blue Chests. I get Rocket Engines here and there before Liquid Water also.

It is bad range. You can find mushrooms in the golden chests. Have you found the dead body. That one is a good one to save before looting and reloading as it is a special chest and might be able to give you 2 or 3 mushrooms. Have you looked in the blue chests scattered around or just in the wrecks? There are 6 underground bases that I know of, there might be more.

If you do another play through, I have the best luck with finding mushrooms if I do not start looting anything that I don't have to before 4.5 MTI, and then I loot everything I can find until I get the T2 deconstruction chip. This works for me, but might not work for someone else. Before 4.5 MTI I only look for space food and seed packets (3 egg plants or 2 squash).
Although I do get about 10 of the easy golden chests while waiting between building and gathering.

My mistake in grouping them together, but not making it clear it's just the randomly from scattered blue chests that won't happen until after liquid water. Inside crashes can be anytime, but I didn't get a single one.

mushroom seeds will show up in the random blue chests. however their content is a random roll depending on you current Ti level. Mushrooms are typically the rarerst tier, and only show up that much starting with Lakes (50 MTi).

The best time to scourge the map for blue chests is from Trees (2 GTi) up to but before Fish (120 GTi) during which time mushroom seeds go from very rare to merely rare.

Evil RNG - sometimes it happens. If you're in the Lakes stage, each blue chest has an ULTRA RARE chance of containing Mushroom seeds. Nefai gave the answer if you're willing to fight back against the RNG. Save before opening, reload if it wasn't to your liking. Rinse and repeat...
