Q is your crafting menu, it's broken up into sections, the second section, the very first thing is your crafter.
Trick to exploring, always carry 3 iron, 2 titanium, and 1 silcone. You can then create a habitat and door to refill your o2 (or just carry o2 caninsters), You can set up little outposts like that along the way, or you can deconstruct them after using it.
I know the exact crate you are talking about, you cant crouch, but you can get to it kinda, just move around a bit and eventually you will be able to click on it.
For a step by step, build what ever you can, wait till it raises your ti which will unlock better stuff, build it, rinse and repeat. It is actually a very simple game to play.
You are dependent on space food that you find for quite a while. Eventually you can build a Food Grower and plant food seeds in it. You'll need two or three of the T1 version in order to have enough food to eat. You'll want to create as much oxygen as you can as fast as you can - the T1 Food Grower is unlocked by having enough oxygen in the atmosphere.
Food is the biggest strategic challenge. If you run out of space food and do not have food growers yet, you can continue but it is challenging. (Assuming you are not playing hardcore for your first run thru.) Whenever you die, you will respawn with some food.Just plan to die frequently while you search for more space food.
(The planters are for flowers to add plant mass for terraforming.)
