Effective area of automatic crafters and optimizers?

Are they affecting just a things on same level, in pure 2D circle on your autocrafter's level or regular 3D sphere, and or 3D cube, so I can build second and third rooms full of lockers above and under my autocrafter?

they work vertical, not sure about the range but i've placed them on top of buildings and they affected the stuff inside the building. also placed them above t5 heaters without issue.

The range of an autocrafter is a perfect sphere. So it can reach to floors below and above, but the radius is less than it is on the same floor.
