Did we used to be able to drink water straight from the lake?
I'm sure we did, but maybe I'm thinking of another similar game?

It is a tech you open about late early part of to mid game. Then younwill be able to drink from any water source. You should be able to find it in the locked blueprints either in your hubs unlock screen or the biodome. Don't remember which tree it is one.

You're looking for the water purifier tech - top branch of the blueprints tree which is a combination of all terraforming numbers. It's fairly late in the tree, but allows you to drink from any water source safely.
