After going through the portal and working through the wreckage to the treasure room - there aren't any crystals to open another portal and I've used up the crystals on my planet. How do I keep doing portals w/o the crystals? Before the update there were plenty to keep going, but now I am stuck lol

You can make the pulsar quartz in the biolab. With three of them, you can explore level 1 portals wrecks and get more crystals.

Do you just keep searching for portals until a lvl 1 comes up? I didn't know you could re-roll portals sorry

There are portals that only require Pulsar Quartz. Pulsar Quartz is craftable through a biolab. Eventually you can find a blueprint to craft Solar quartz through the portals.

Additionally, I have rarely had a portal give me less quartz than what it took to open it, but I had to do a couple sweeps/passes around the map to make sure I didn't miss a chest.I know I started with the caves and I am up to at least 1/2 T2 storage for yellow, blue, purple, and green quartz. Pink/pulsar financed my trip off the planet with the smugglers.

Couple other things to note:

• The portal control lets you "reroll" the 3 available portals for no cost. I looked for a couple rarity 4 or 5 | easy 1 or 2 (in essence a 3 level difference) when I first started running. This let me get quartz back before proceeding down the more challenging portals.
  
• There are blue boxes located outside of wrecks. If you feel you are getting shorted on resources the goodies may not be all inside a wreck.
  
• There are portal maps with multiple wrecks. I am certain that I missed that in the first couple of portals I ran and before I started using flares to mark wreck status.
  
• Speaking of flares, they are pretty helpful to mark looted chests. Or you can always drop the items you do not want to clear the chest out.
  
• The 1.03 update (late May) added fusion cores and destructible terrain to portals. You may need to begin crafting/carrying some explosives and fusion cores with you to fully explore wrecks now. It feels like these open another treasure room or 2 per wreck. I will admit I am not entirely sold on the return/per core of this change, but it is nice to get a free update, new features, and a little more variety in wreck generation.

I personally think the level 4 and 5 difficulty wrecks are now too large and complex to be fun.
