For making things, usually in the Biolab. There are recipes that you'll eventually unlock in the tech trees that use it as an ingredient.

It's for things ranging from algae generators and fish farms to circuit boards. You will be able to make them from mushrooms and silicon but you will eventually need a lot of the little buggers.
