I starved on my first play through as well. There are three events at the start of the game which have you frantically trying to do something: the food issue is one of those. I'll let you figure out the other two for yourself. ;-)
Here is what I do whenever I start a new game:
Food is my first priority. I open whatever crates I can find looking for food and seeds. Do note that when you open a crate, you get items appropriate for your "progress" in the game, so as soon as you are no longer desperate for food and seeds, you might want to save opening crates for "later". I feel that wrecks are the best place to find seeds, but that might just be anecdotal. Anyway...
The food packets, I only eat one when my hunger bar is almost completely empty. If you eat too soon, you'll waste "food potential", so the first part of the game I never have a completely full food meter.
As for seeds, you're going to find two types: flower seeds in jars, and food seeds in packets. The seeds in jars are (initially) just used in vegetubes for generating oxygen. Oxygen is super important to boost early on, because oxygen opens up the ability to build your Food Grower. You need to hit something like 12.00 ppt oxygen to build the Food Grower. I find if I build four Vegetubes, that should be enough. Don't forget to put the flower seeds in the vegetubes. When you find better flower seeds, replace the ones in your vegetubes with the better seeds.
But you also need to take a balanced approach: increasing your Heat is also useful, because the next tier of Vegetube unlocks around 500 pK. Once you get Vegetube T2, replace your T1 Vegetubes with T2 Vegetubes. Don't both keeping the T1 tubes around; the T2 tubes are much better.
So now you've unlocked your Food Grower. If you can, build at least two of them. Three is better. Four is ideal. But even one is better than nothing.
Your Food Grower is going to want a seed to grow. Any seed you have will do, but some seeds grow better food than others. The best are Beans, followed by Squash and Mushrooms. Eggplants are the lowest quality food, but if that is all you have, it is what it is!
Fortunately, when your food is done growing, after you harvest, you get to keep the seed in the Food Grower. Unfortunately, food takes awhile to grow, hence needing more than one food grower.
There are T2 Food Growers which are faster, but you won't get them for awhile and honestly, your food problems will probably be over long before then.
So some pro-tips:
1. Beans are the best food, and their only use is for eating, or--much later--creating higher quality food.
2. Save all your food seed packets, because you will absolutely need a TON of Eggplant, Squash and Mushrooms in the future. They are used to build other items, such as fertilizer and bioplastics.
3. Four T1 Food Growers with Beans will keep you very well fed for the first half of the game.
4. You can't create, only find, the initial four types of food seed packets, so don't throw them out. Any you find, save. Like I said, Eggplant, Squash and Mushrooms are critical later on.
5. There are other food options later, but Beans can easily be the foundation of your diet for the entire game if you want.
I recommend going to a spaceship wreck and search it. There are several blue chests in each of the bigger wrecks, and you should be able to get enough food to last a little while. (Note you will not be able to build the habitat inside. Build it just outside, and you'll have to allow enough health to run outside to it before you die.)
