But I agree, it should be automatic for oxygen and also for water and food.
I hate to be the one to say this, but that's only in certain gamemodes which are actually not the intended way to play that game.
I am all for such modes for players who want that, but the intended way to play survival games is to manually manage food, water and sometimes things like oxygen, temperature or poisoning effects.
this probably something everyone expects from PC game, not some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mobile grinder.
And I'm kind of curious what mode of subnautica has automatic consumption of food and water, only thing I can recall that comes close is the still suit which produces water rather than pour it down a feeding tube.
Or choose a difficulty level that fits more to your playstyle.
